My PS2 has an extremely weak lens. So far, it has only been able to read Verbatim, and even with Vertbatim, it only has about a 60% success rate.

I went to go stock up on DVD-Rs at my local computer store, but they were sold out of Verbatim. However, they offered me a 100pk of Taiyo Yuden for $30, and said that Taiyo Yuden were pretty much the best you could buy.

I tried reading the sticky post about the different media, and all I got from it was that I should burn my TYG03 at 12x or above. But I'm wondering, is Taiyo Yuden any better than Verbatim, and will my PS2 be able to read them at all? It can't read other brands like Fujifilm or Memorex or whatever. Only Verbatim has worked.

Also, is there a chance that my DVDs are a fake brand or something? It says DVD-R16X for Professional on the disks, and it has CAUTION in four different languages. The sticker holding the spindle thing closed said TYG03.

Eep. Some more questions...

So I tried burning a game onto one of the Taiyo Yuden disks, and my PS2 can't seem to read it. Mind you, I tried burning this particular game twice onto Verbatim disks and neither of them read as well, so it may have been ripped incorrectly or something.

The warning thing inside the package said to make sure that my DVD drive is up to the 16x writing speed specifications. However, I am pretty sure my drive only burns at a maximum of 8x, as that is always the highest speed Nero ever lets me choose. Should I go out and get a new DVD drive?

Also, I noticed after opening the package that the tops of the DVDs are also reflective, unlike the Verbatims which are less reflective on top and have the logo and stuff on them. Is it still safe to write on them with a Sharpie? =P

I dont advise to burn ps2 games that fast,so i am not suprised you have problems
x4 is the fastest i use,but thats just imo
no doubt there are people that burn at max speed, but thats just foolish

According to the thread about media:

"
TYG03 = burn at 8x or 12x if burner can do it and if you have a good burner. they are 16x and will burn great at 16x so they're up to you just don't burn them below 8x, they hate it

LLoyd. You really should 'bite the bullet' and buy a new burner. It will save you a lot of money and hassle in the long run. Compared to a pack of good quality dvd's they are really cheap and are a Do it Yourself replacement for your present burner.
