Quick firmware question/Devhook problem

Need some help guys.

I can't remember what my PSP firmware was, but in any case I have installed firmware 2.71 SE-B' of Dark Alex's.
I can happily drop ISO's onto the mem stick and play away.

However, I want to use PVNC remote desktop.
This requires the PSP to run at firmware 1.5
But, hoosing 1.5 in Devhook just shuts the PSP down.

So I figure something's corrupt - I format memory stick and then followed this guide http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/413913
with the download given (HENC) and try again.
Same thing.
I get to the blue screen and the PSP shuts down. I power up and go to Devhook, choose 1.5 & PSP just shuts down - no luck.

Is it because I have 2.71 SE-B' and not Sony's 2.71?
If so, how the hell do I get back to 2.71 so I can run PVNC?

Thanks loads for any help - I'm at my wits end here.
Been Googling and trying all day.

to go to 1.5 u need to access the recovery menu and press x where its says "run program at psp/game/recovery/eboot.pbp" but u need the recovery folder (just put it in ur GAME folder)

Gone to recovery console an run in 1.5 kernel.
Whay can't I use devhook to change the firmware though as in the guide in the link I posted above?
