I tried searching but read that you need a gamecube controller,
to use the update disk? cause my wii controller does not navigate
in the menu. :(

n00b to wii.

If you are using the more recent setup disks you can use the reset button on your wii to move through the menus. Tap reset to move through the menu and hold reset to make a selection.
