I am thinking of mod chipping my wii so I can play my backups of my games but am a little unsure of which is the best chip.
I have heard that the wiikey is one of the best.
What would you guys recommend?

nah, wiikey it not the best. Give me a reason why is it the best? The wiikey doesn't have a disable feature,all other chip does. second it have gamecube audio problem, while all other modchip worked fine, and third the team that do the update take forever to come up with a update, so in all they the worst chip to get. Unless you guys tell me otherwise? because they have too many bugged mentioned above, while all other competitor worked fine.

@comski
All Modchips have stealth mode. But some actually have a disable feature which turns off the Modchip all together.

All chips, including the WiiKey can be disabled. It's just a case of inserting a switch between the chip and the drive points.

but that it too much of a hassled, why go and do that when other can be disable within the chip. It stealth because it a drive-mod and nothing to do with the motherbroad. But what if Nintendo did something while you play online like a second scan to check if the boot code is there, the code that original have to boot the disc. My advice to ppls is to play original only and disable the chip while playing online, just to be in the safe side, and play backup for offline.

Not really, It's only 1 more wire.

I doubt that's even possible, besides, backups are an exact clone of the originals so all the boot code is there.

It is a switch. All you need to do is wire from point 2 of the Wiikey to the switch and then to the board.

Yes. To the contact point you'd normally solder the wiikey to.

I was speaking of a built in disable feature that you use the reset button on the Wii to disable the Modchip. That way you don't have to add an extra switch.
I was bored so I drew up a small diagram of how to install a switch to disable a Wiikey.

It's a simple on/off switch you can buy from Radioshack, Maplins or similar electronics outlets. Bear in mind you'll have to make the switch external, which you can do by either having it visible via one of the ports, or better, drilling a hole into the case and installing it in there. Once it's installed it's just a case of fliping the switch to enable/disable the chip.
It might sound daunting but really it's a very simple mod to do.
