Do i have to have a mod chip or can i just use swapmagic.

You can use swap magic, but:
1) You need an original disc of swap magic (you need to buy it).
2) Modchip is better than swap magic in some ways.

Yeah you can use either but swapmagic is certainly the easier of the two unless you was to get someone to chip your ps2 for you. then its a simple case of running a backup without first running a boot disk which with swapmagic you have to do.
