Do burned dual-layer discs work in most stand alone DVD players?

YES, but your best bet is to use good media like Verbatim DVD+R DL and booktype it to DVD-ROM burning no faster then 4x then it should playback fine.

also make sure your standalone player supports/plays DVD+R DL ,if it doesn't list that format it should still play but make skip a bit at the layer break
