Hi all,
I have done quite allot of research into the PSP custom firmware and haven't really decided on a certain one to choose. the 3.03oe-c was the one that stuck out but i'm guessing thats a fairly old one now ?

Basically, I only want to convert my UMD's to ISO to play from the stick as I hear the games load faster plus i wont have to carry them around anymore, Will need a bigger memory stick though.
I still want new UMD games to work too.

Im not too bothered about ps1 Emulators but i wouldn't mind the Sega Genesis one for classic games like streets of rage etc. I still want the internet features etc and im not to bothered about modding icons and battery icons.

Can anyone suggest a Reliable custom firmware to use which will meet my needs ?

PSP Details
Currently 3.03 Firmware (waiting for GTA to come)
Has the new Motherboard (ta-082 I think, the one that needs to be patched)

Another question is, once i have upgraded to a custom firmware, am i right that i cant turn the psp on without the memory in it as it needs to read files from the stick ? Was just something i read on the net and wanted to be sure.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, any help would be awesome

first i recommend 3.40 OEA, no major bugs reported as of yet. if u consider those from m33, they have bugs that require patches, so i will not recommend that.

about the turning on without a memory stick, it is not needed. no files need to be read on ur memory stick howsoever. so theres no need to worry

Easy choice: Either 3.40 OE-A or 3.52 M33.

I'd say the 3.40 OE-A is a tiny bit better, but you won't be able to play the newest games that are coming out at the moment. All the emulators etc will work on all custom firmwares.

Right, Ive now sucessfully downgraded to 1.50 Firmware (Gta came today)

Im thinking the 3.40oe-a firmware is the one to choose as you guys recommended it to me.

is there anything important i should know about upgrading from 1.50 to the custom firmware before doing so.

Also, Is it a good idea to now format the memory stick or do i need the files from the 3.03 - 1.50 downgrader

Heres the guide i have but haven't given it a try yet:

1. Place the oeupdmaker and oeupdmaker% folders from the 3.40
oe-a firmware package to the GAME folder on your PSP (It can be found
in the PSP folder that is in the root of your PSP memory stick)
and then rename the 3.40 firmware EBOOT to 340.PBP and the 1.50
firmware EBOOT to 150.PBP, this MUST be done, then copy these
two files to the ?oeupdmaker? folder.

2. Now disconnect your PSP from your computer then navigate to the
GAME tab on your PSP and run the 3.40 oe-a update maker, this will
create a file called DATA.DXAR in your oeupdmaker folder. Now connect
your PSP to your computer again and place the 340oeflasher and
340oeflasher% folders from the 3.40 oe-a firmware package into your
GAME folder and place the DATA.DXAR file from the oeupdmaker folder
into the 340oeflasher folder.

3. Now disconnect your PSP from your computer and navigate to the
game tab on your PSP and run the 3.40 OE-A flasher and follow the
on screen instructions. Once it?s finished your PSP will now be
running 3.40 OE-A! To check, go to the settings tab>system
settings>system settings.

Now you can run homebrew, PSP games and ISO?s

Yes, it's usually a good idea to format your memory stick, and then once again when you've got to 3.40 OE-A. If you follow the guide you showed closely then you should have no problems.

Yes, it's normal for nearly all homebrew apps to have a corrupt icon (this is because of the dummy folder (the one with the % at the end))

Try using this: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/38

The readme's a bit messed up, just place the UMDDUMP and UMDDUMP% files in your GAME150 folder.

EDIT: Just tested it out on one of my UMD's, if your card is full it does up to when there's no more space, and you can exit the game to put that piece on your pc, then re-run it and it'll remember where it got up to and finish off. One thing that's very strange... When it had finished, for a small game, the file size was 1.6GB! But i put all the files together and extracted the .000 file with winrar and copied the files to desktop, then told it to make an Archive of all the different files and named it .iso, when it had finished the file was only 137MB lol

I've got a 2GB at the moment, and can usually fit on around 3 games at once (Depending on size, can be anything from 1 to 5 or 6)

But also i am getting a 4GB soonish, will help carry some more games.

Alright man lets get to this. Alright for dumping/ripping your UMD's there is no better than USB SSS. Heres a short guide written by ThisDude but modified.(Modified part I put in red). I quoted the important part...
Quote:
1.) Download "USB Special System Storage":
HERE: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1008
2.) Extract it using "WinRAR" or a free alternative called IzArc. (Search on "Google" if you don't one of these)
3.) Open the folder you extracted from "WinRAR"/IzArc. (USBSSS_100)
4.) Copy the folder "PSP" inside the folder "MS_ROOT" to the ROOT Folder of your PSP MEMORY STICK. (E.G. X) - (X as in the drive letter of your PSP) - (Just allow it to overwrite, it will only add extra files and folders)
5.) Exit from "USB Connection" but keep your USB Cable in..
6.) Then in "XMB" go to "GAME" -> "Memory Stick" -> and start "USB Special System Storage"
7.) Now put in the "UMD" you want to rip into your PSP.
8.) Select the first option; "Virtual FAT16 . UMD ISO-9000".
9.) Now go to "My Computer" and open up the PSP drive.
10.) Now you should see your game.
11.) Now copy your game to anywhere you want on your Computer. - (E.x. "Desktop")
12.) Now your rip is being made, the rip will be finished when the percentage on the PSP has reached 0% again then press "X" to disconnect. - (DO NOT disconnect until the percentage has gone back down to 0 again or your rip will be incomplete.)
13.) Now just choose "Exit to XMB".
14.) And you are done. (Easy, wasn't it?)
In my experience with this app, it doesnt start at 100% and end at 0% like stated. For me it starts at 0% and ends at 100%, also if the rip is at 98% and it finishes ripping it will say finished at 98%. A few quarks in the program but a awesome program nonetheless.

Also for playing ISO there is no better than team M33's custom firwmares. Every ISO can be loaded with the need for UMD emulation and/or a UMD in teh UMD drive. Plus it can play the latest games. If your interesting in going up to a M33 firmware use this program. It makes upgrading and downgrading a piece of cake.

Hey Pea, i've got to admit your suggested program sounds better than mine lol :)

But in my experience, the M33 firmwares not play much of the homebrew i have (not sure if it's just wrong settings or something, but they're the same as the one's i have in 3.40 OE-A, and in 3.40 they all work)

Yeah with the early 3.51 M33 not a lot of homebrew worked. But I have gotten all my emulators to work for it. And some homebrew just has to be recoded for the new custom firmwares. But yeah theres no doubt that OE firmwares are best for homebrew, but for ISO team M33 and their sony iso loader rule for playing iso's.

Yea, that's true, all my emulators work, but other homebrew is still a bit "iffy"

@80's

I just thought since you most likely want to save space on your memory stick. Google the term "ripkit + (insert game name here)". A ripkit will take a ISO/the files from the ISO and remove all the large files like movie clips and what not.
