I'm having some trouble. I just made a copy of a dvd and it played fine in my PS2 the first time. Now it isn't even being read by the PS2. It's working fine in my dvd player downstairs though. Keep in mind these are memorex DVDs, but why is it inconsistant? Does it have anything to do with the writing speed. Is fast or slow good? Please help I'm new at this, thanks!

Change your media and you should be fine. Stay away from this brand it does not work on burners. Tayo Yuden or Ritek or Vertibitim are the ones to choose for burners.

Well, I just used Memorex, and Then I read about how notorious it is for crappy burning. NOw I have Dynex, which is like a Best Buy company. I was told that DVDs like Memorex and others work much much better if burned at a lower speed; I was using 8x, and was told to burn at like 2x. Also, my DVD player downstairs played it fine, does its ability to play divix and MP3 dvds have anything to do with it? Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help.

Suggest you use TYs, Verbs, Sonys. Remember, if it is inconsistent, it must be Memorex.....

So if I purchase any of those DVDs, it will work with every DVD player? Also, where can I actually buy them? And the DVDs play on a normal DVD player, why don't they work on my PS2?

The disc your using memorex are the worst! go to Bestbuy Staples CompUSA or Micro Center your newspaper ads you get the picture and get Verbatim DVD's . How fast are you burning I hope no slower than 4X no faster than 8x and update your firmware for your drive

your drive is dual layer right??...if it isnt then it wornt work corretly! if it is not then just get verbs dvd + or dvd -

I dno how to tell, but it's an HP Pavilion with 2 drives. One, the bottom, says DVD-ROM and the other says lightscribe DVD +- Writer/ CD writer. Can ya help me out?

You are getting a lot of information, most of which is misleading.
1) If the Memorex disc works on your DVD players but not on the PS2, one can point as much to the PS2 as to the disc as the source of the problem. There is not enough information to determine which it is.
2) Changing your media may or may not work. If the problem is the PS2 drive, changing media probably will not solve the problem.
3) Memorex is far from the worst DVDs to choose. There are some truly terrible producers in the world and there are also lots of B-grade product in the market. (The factory that makes Verbatim and Dynex also makes Memorex discs. That alone should be some indication that they cannot be the "worst," but hyperbole is so much fun!) Reducing the recording speed works in some but not all cases because the laser is at reduced power and the drive is turning at a slower rate of speed. But if the firmware is not written well for slow speeds--and there are a number of test reports that indicate that extremely slow speeds can be a problem--then the recording quality at 2X can be worse than that at 4X. (This is particularly true for CD-Rs, most of which should not be recorded and slower than 4X because of their fast-reacting dye that can be overburned at too slow a speed.)
4) No DVD+/-R medium is guaranteed to play in every DVD player. Much depends on the quality of the recording (a function of the recording drive, the recording software, the recording medium, and the compatibility of all of them), how well the recorded medium is handled, and the ability of the player to read lower levels of reflectivity from recorded media. Newer DVD players are much better in this regard than older models.
5) Your drive is a Lite-on DVD+R/-R dual format DL drive. There are a number of different versions, but since it is a DL drive it will be able to record Verbatim DVD+R DL media. That does not mean that all DVD players will be able to play those media, however. Many hang up at the transition layer when the laser has to refocus from the outer layer to the inner layer. Newer DL drives are doing a better job recording the transition point to make it as similar to a DVD-ROM transition as possible.

just curious, but how can you tell that it is a DL drive?
is it because they(manufacturers) dont even make burners that are not DL capable nowadays

Actually, I misread one of the posts and thought scrode5 had mentioned that it was. He said he had bought DL media, but he didn't confirm whether or not it was a DL drive.
If I remember correctly, all DVD drives capable of recording to discs faster than 4X are dual format drives. LightScribe and DL capability were almost simultaneous, and all drives today (except laptop drives) are DL, including all the LS drives I've seen. HP sources from Light-on. I should have said "is probably a Light-on DL" to be more correct. My mistake.

yea, i think it's because my preferences weren't set to dvd-9 and i was burning with DLs. they're ok though, play from start to finish. i just burnt a new dvd with dvd-9 settings 4x speed on a verbatim, i'll let you know how it tunrs out.

thats called pixelation, and you should be able to fix that. It's not something that you should have to deal with.
