I have had my PS2 for about 2 years now, and I got it refurbished from Gamestop, so I dunno how old it really is. I modded it with a flip top and have been able to play games without any real problems. Sometimes my PS2 would not boot Swap Magic, but after booting a normal game or somesuch it would work again. Recently I have had serious problems with games freezing at loading screens, and now I cannot get anything to boot up in my PS2. When I put a disc in, it will scan it, then begin to make a strange noise, which sounds to me like the laser moving back and forth rapidly, but I dont really know. Is there anything I can do to save my PS2 or should I just throw it out and get a new one?

yea. I think i have the same problem. My ps2 spins up the disc for 5 seconds or somewhere around that and then it makes a couple clicking sounds like the laser was trying to read. I think these are just disc read errors from the laser. Try cleanin ur lens with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. If that doesnt work, the you can try adjusting the pot(making sure you mark where the dot was originally). But for mine, which could be the same problem as urs, i dunno what to do(i tried adjusting the white knobs-mines a v9- and cleaning the laser)-no luck. It stopped reading discs after i dropped it by accident but sounds like the same problem as cosmonkey. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I have the same problem after installing my ripper iv modchip. For me it only happens when i try to put in a burned game. Sometimes when the "PLAYSTATION 2" text appears in large across the screen it's garbaled or appears in inverse (playstation 2 text is BLACK with a white outline not white text?) I think this is when the chip "injects" the proper boot information for a copy but then it starts making loud rapid clicking sounds and the laser is going nuts trying to read disc. Then it'll go back to the browser screen and say "no data" and the laser is still going nuts untill i shut it off. I think it's media i'm using (fuji dvd-) because regular ps2 games work. I was wondering if my new mod chip might be messed up or if it's just the fugi blanks, or if it's my ps2 laser tracking needs to be adjusted!?!?!? If i fix the problem i will post it here.

Well, since nobody here seemed to have any advice, I went ahead and got a brand new PS2 slim. I installed the fliptop, and everything runs just fine on it.

I think what you did is probably the easiest way, no reason to kick a dead horse when a brand new one is just around the corner.
