if the sticker is still intact, yes, it'll work. that's a great idea actually ;). an even better idea though is to buy it, get it fixed, re sell it as fixed, do that enough times you can buy a NEW xbox :D

All MS asks for is the serial number of the 360. You don't need proof it was purchased new. But before you bid on one, ask the seller if he registered it when he bought it. If it was registered, then MS may not (but I don't know this for sure) repair it if it has a different owner.

if the seller has registered the console then it will be their details attached to the serial number so no it wont work when i got 3 red lights

i rang microsoft and i said what would happen if i sold it they said both parties would need to be present to change over the details at which point the new owner would have the choice of paying for a new warranty

MS might be too soft on this one. Usually warranties are not transferable.

That's what I was thinking, too. This whole thread got me thinking that it might not be a bad way to getting a 2nd 360 cheap. So I got one off Ebay today.

I won't even try changing the paste/clamp to see if I can get it working. I am going to get the serial number off the board, though. Then I'll send it right off to MS. The replacement should have the new heatsink and I'll see if I get a new board.

Well I got the Premium on 8/10. It's mfg. is 03/30/2006 and has the Hitachi drive. I was going to open it up and get the mobo number. That way I can check after the repairs and see if it was replaced (if I happen to get the same console back). But instead I just used a felt tipped pen and marked on the inside of the usb port.

I used MS's web site to request a repair. It was pretty quick and simple. You do have to register the console before you can procede to the repair page, though. Don't know if you have to register it if you call the 1-800 number.

I got a conformation email with a tracking number for the box within an hour. But the email also stated
Quote:
Your Xbox console will be serviced and you should receive it within 4-6 weeks.
Was anyone ever told it'll take this long when they phoned in for a repair?

I am obviously missing something as noone has pointed it out but if you buy a broken console isn't the reason the sellers are selling it on ebay is because they have no warranty i.e. it is voided? most likely because they have opened it?

If you could just send it off to MS why cant they just do that, surely only people who have ripped off the warantee sticker or who's warantee is outdated sell on ebay?

Nope. There's a ton of them on there. Most of them are the "console only". But there are some complete systems. I got a complete premium for $132 shipped. I've already received it and MS has shipped out the repair box. UPS tracking shows the repair box arriving to me on the 16th.

I'd imagine the majority of these sellers don't know of the 3 year extended warranty for the 3 red ring. Heck, they may have never known of the warranty being extended from 3 months to a year.

I really didn't have a need for a second 360. I just figured I'ld try it and see. I want to see what kind of "repair" MS does. If I get the new heatsink, I may take it off the repaired unit and put it on my good 360.

Questions I asked the eBay seller:
- Is the warranty sticker intact
- Is it or has it ever been modded
- Is it banned from Live
- Is it registered

I received my repair back on 9/7. It's not the same one I sent in. The case appears to be new. It still has the silver warrantee sticker... not the new paper one which has been reported. It has an 8/17/2007 mfg. date. The mobo and the metal shell are used as both have dust around where the rear fan sits. The gpu has the glue around it and the new heat sink. It also came with the Benq drive. The x clamps appear to be new models. They are stamped "Foxconn Rev.L 01/AUG/07" and seem more flexable than the original ones.

I am going to swap the new heat sink for the old one which is on my original 360. Haven't done it yet, though, as I had to order some Artic Silver.

I don't know if I'm going to hang on to this repair or sell it. I already have one in the family room and one which is modded which I use in my RV (we travel alot in the summer). I have a MS wheel which I don't use... so it might make a nice package if I sell them together.
