I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.
Plenty of ram, and speed to quickly boot the machine.

Heres the deal, when i go to login, it TAKES FOREVER, eventually my background loads, and then explorer just sits there, and then about 30 minutes later, some of the other services start loading,

the thing is most of my vital services arent loading, like all my network stuff, and internet protocols.

I tried

sfc /scannow to fix it
all sorts of virus scans, they found nothing
went into safe mode and tried to restore it.

But the thing is, is that what puzzles me is that i cannot boot into safe mode with networking, but i can boot into every other mode.

And when i start the computer normally after configuring msconfig to load only basic devices and drivers, the computer runs fine also.

Something in my services im guessing when the computer starts up is hanging or something.

Please help.

Well, the first thing that we need to do is to find out what is causing the problem. Download this free little program. http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall-1.htm

When you run the program you will be able to see all programs that are running on the machine. If you are not sure about something then use google to find out if it is malicious or not.

There are a few other steps to follow to speed up your startup times. Run Disk Cleanup and Defrag your machine. You may also want to run TrendMicro's RootkitBuster http://www.trendmicro.com/download/rbuster.asp

The last possibility is to run FDISK/mbr from the command prompt in case your startup files are messed up.

Did you run any programs like virus scans or ad-aware programs while in safe mode? Which AV are you using? If all else fails try an online scan at trendmicro.

Let me know if you are successful or need a little more assistance.

I have done enerything and more.

This problem is way bigger than what u think it is.

My dcom settings are messed up for several programs

My winsock32 is corrupt/

Now if u have some multipurpose fixing tool that can fix all of this(no not reinstalling) I'd happy

Re-installing is always the last ditch effort to get things done. As far as the Winsock32 file you can probably find here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?winsock

Did you run the RootkitBuster? Have you run any ad-aware programs? Did you recently install something that could be conflicting with your startup? Did you do an online scan? You're leaving me flying blind here. I can't troubleshoot the problem if I don't know what you have and have not done.

From the sounds of what you are telling me, you might have a hidden trojan of some kind that is slowly deteriorating your machine. A virus is just a program and it can be gotten rid of, but I need you to look for it.

You seem like you know quite a bit about software so run your scans in safe mode. Also download HijackThis from trendmicro: http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/per...TM_clusty_flg=6

After you have run your scans and your system is clean run HjT but do not clean, just post the log for me to look at. If you need some good ad-aware programs go to http://www.download.com and get these guys. The are all free and in conjunction with each other will get your system pretty clean. Some will say that one program can do it all but I don't believe them!!

Ad-Aware 2007 (Lavasoft)
A-Squared Free
Spybot Search & Destroy
CCleaner

Then run HjT and post a report.

Ok never mind i fixed it.

I had to reset my winsock2 back to its normal state.

I had tried to configure it to hide my ip address and something went horribly wrong. i had forgotten i had done it.

and i still couldnt get it hidden(cause its not possible)

But just a little advice.

Dont always assume its the work of a virus
i am a advanced computer user.

Well, without enough information you generally have to assume the worst. If you want to hide your IP address there are a few ways to do it. Firefox has some features that you can add to help hide it, although it doesn't work in every case. There are also some programs that you can run to hide your IP. http://www.privacysitereviews.com/

If you noticed in my post I didn't give you links to programs because I could tell that you knew what you were doing. I just always start with the basics and work from there. Configuring your Winsock32 to hide your IP address, would have been the last thing that I thought of!(

See from the statement I made above I wasn't necessarily thinking that it was a virus. Quite often new programs, hardware, or changes to the registry or settings in a program can cause conflicts.

Glad that you got it figured out!
