i find the manual way much much easier. i have always used this method and have NEVER had a semi-brick. its also safer than flashing coz if the file that u want to flash is too big, it will cause a semi-brick, but if u do it the manual way, the computer will tell u there isnt enough space left.
but i spose its down to how u want to do it :)
Currently on my 7th PS3 and 4th Xbox, gotta love technology..

Because I want to change my XMB theme but I want to do it the safest and easiest way. I have been searching google and found that some people fully bricked when trying to change the theme. I only have 1 PSP so I'm not trying to brick this. What if I run into the no memory left thing how can I fix that?

Definitely manual-
And you shouldn't run out of room provided you took the necessary steps first...
-make a complete backup of your flash0 folders and save them to your computer in a safe place
-boot up your psp in recovery mode-and go to >Advanced>Toggle USB (flash0)
-Open up your FONT folder and locate this file:ltn9.pgf-Copy it to your desktop and rename it to gb3s1518.bwfon-After you do that, take another copy of that ltn9.pgf from the FONT folder, and drag it to the desktop again except this time rename it jpn0.pgf so now you should have two files on your desktop-Highlight the two newly renamed files from your desktop and drag them back over to the FONT folder-click OK to overwrite the files...Once you are done with that, you can go back to the root of your flash0 (where you see the six folders) And open the DIC folder-select all of the files in the DIC folder (ctrl-A) and go ahead and delete them all...These are dictionary files-however, they are for Japanese fonts--I dont know about you, but I dont speak or read Japanese, and I do not play Japanese games for that matter, so it is safe to do this- the only drawback is that if you do happen to play a Japanese game-the fonts wont show correctly....But on the plus side, by doing what you just did-you have successfully freed up about 4.5MB of space, which is more than enough for adding a custom theme..
Hope this is helpful...

Wait I already backed up my flash and it already had the two files you said to rename, renamed already so all I have to do is delete the Japanese files. But whats the worst possible outcome by changing themes cuz I really dont know what I'm doing.

Thats fine if you already backed up your flash0 to your computer, I meant to change the files that are in your psp's flash..So the two files-font/gb3s1518.bwfon, and font/jpn0.pgf in your psp flash, are about 40-60KB in size now?? If so, then you can go ahead and delete the contents of the DIC folder in the psp flash0...This will give you enough room for themes.
The worst outcome when using custom themes is semi-bricking your psp by using a topmenu_plugin.rco that is not compatible with your firmware...(ex: using a theme geared for 3.03-3.11 on 3.40OE) That file is located in VSH/RESOURCE-its the actual menu and icons you see when you are looking at your psp..So after installing a theme and you dont see your menu or any icons, then your psp crashes and shuts itself off...Go into recovery mode and replace that topmenu_plugin.rco with the one backed up from your computer..
And as long as you dont do something foolish like deleting random files in other folders, you will be fine..If you followed the steps above, you will have more than enough room for pretty much any theme out there..

Which theme are you using? if the font is too small, put in your original ltn0.pgf from your backup into the FONT folder in flash0..and if you are getting a white screen, but you can see the icons..scroll to the settings menu-and down to "themes", and select the one under "original"..the theme you have probably only has one bitmap and not one for every month..

well just put your original files that you backed up to your computer into vsh/resource in flash0- that will take care of the semi-brick...thank goodness for recovery mode huh? You must have missed a file or two when you copied the theme over..

I dunno maybe it was a bad top_menu file. I was scared if you read in my other slightly similar post it had all the characteristics of a full brick cuz it wouldnt come on. But I could get into recovery. Yeah I love recovery I used to be scared of it but I see its your best friend on CFW. But are you sure it cant full brick if I do something wrong? sorry if im annoying i was just scared like heck when it wouldnt turn on.

Ensure the theme is designed for the version of firmware you used. There is a program called "3.30 to 3.40 easy" which converts a firmware 3.30 theme so that it is compatible with 3.40 firmware. PM if interested.

yeah, I read your other thread also-I guess I'm "that guy" you were referring to huh? But as long as you dont monkey with other files in the flash0, you will be fine- When changing themes, you basically only copy/paste files into VSH/RESOURCE and/or the FONT folder-
what I do when changing or switching themes, and I do this frequently is this:
go into flash0/vsh/resource and select all the files and delete them-then I take my original flash0/vsh/resource backup from my computer and put those into flash-that way I start out fresh each time..
Sometimes when you are trying out different themes, some themes have different files in the vsh/resource than others-like an opening_plugin.rco or a gameboot.pmf whereas some others dont..which is why I replace my originals every time I switch themes so I dont get leftover junk in my vsh/resource folder..I think I have only semi-bricked like twice and both times were intentional because I was mixing themes and using a topmenu_plugin from a different firmware so I could see firsthand what the effects were..
If you are still interested in changing themes, but dont want to mess with flash0, you could always install CXMB on your memory stick...its just a plugin that you enable in recovery mode, and the theme runs off of your memory stick..I use it so I can have two different themes on my psp at any given time...give it a try..

sorry to double post-this came in after my response...
Excellent suggestion Mik3h! That works well for converting your topmenu_plugin's for different firmwares...

How so? all you have to do is disable the cxmb.prx plugin via the recovery console and you go back to the theme thats on your flash memory...What are you looking to control?

ahh..are you using a plugin to shut your psp off and/or restart it? and now it doesnt work with your cxmb?
if you go into the seplugins folder on your memory stick and open up the "vsh" file which is a text document-you should see something like: ms0:/TM/cxmb.prx
in your case, you will probably need to add the command for your reboot.prx to that "vsh" file...
First, you will need to locate the reboot.prx on your memory stick-I am guessing its in the seplugins folder..if so, add this line
ms0:/seplugins/reboot.prx
if its not in that folder, then just reference to whereever it happens to be, but usually those prx files just run out of the seplugins folder...
go to file->>save..
So your vsh file will then look like this:
ms0:/TM/cxmb.prx
ms0/seplugins/reboot.prx
Go into recovery and enable the reboot.prx
and you are done...
I also have a better alternative for you but it requires putting files into flash0, but is way better than having to enable and disable a prx all the time...not to mention having to press home and select to shut your psp off?? PM me your email addy-I'll send you the files along with instructions...
