I've been proweling these forums for over a year now, but this is the first time I couldn't find somthing.

I've been using my capture card on its highest setting. The AVI I've produced is 16GB for 15 minutes of film. I need a way to shrink it to be able to create a backup of it onto a dvd-5. Or for that matter, I'd like to have a way to shrink it to any size I want, say for Web-usage.

My question is, is there a program that'll let me do that? Windows Movie Maker will only allow a maximum filesize of a under a GB.

I don't have a capture card so I can only guess that the avi is being saved as PCM or uncompresssed.
Is there no setting for MPEG4 or such?

VirtualDub can be used to compress raw video, but I have never tried anything that size - perhaps someone can jump in.

You can download VirtualDub and a couple of codecs here.

XVid Codec

Lame MP3 codec and how to install.

VirtualDub, look for most recent,'stable' download.
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Run VDub and either drag or load the file.
Click 'Video' and 'Full processing Mode' then 'Compression' and select the XVID codec.
Click 'Audio' then 'Full Processing Mode' then 'Compression' and choose 'Lame MP3' 48,000 128 stereo.

Click 'File' and 'Save as AVI'
