Yes

Yes again but you won't find any 2x or 4x DVD-R on the market.matter of fact its getting pretty hard to find even the 8x speed anymore its all going to 16x speed. the DVD-RW you can get the 4x speed though

Your recorder sounds like an Emerson model made by Funai. Wal-Mart sold them when they were only capable of recording to 4X discs and Wal-Mart was selling only 8X DVD-R discs. The recorder reported "faulty disc" when an 8X disc was put in it, and Wal-Mart contacted each disc supplier and claimed his discs were all bad. (Kind of funny, actually. The same thing happens on this site all the time.)

A firmware update allows the model to record to 8X media, and the sticker is probably one that Funai added at the factory to distinguish the updated models. aabbccdd is correct--no factory is manufacturing 8X DVD-R any more. It is all 16X, and those media will not work in the Emerson recorder. Your best bet is to use 4X DVD-RW discs. (DVD-RW or DVD+RW rated faster than 4X will not work at 1X in any machine; so manufacturers have been reluctant to abandon the 4X DVD+/-RW versions.)
