DVDShrink won't get rid of the copy protection on this, although 99% of the DVDs I back up do so with no problem. I have the same problem with DVDFab Platinum - I thought these two programs were supposed to overcome problems like this?

it looks like an old film ?, in which case Shrink should tear thru it no problem, i'm assuming it's getting to a certain percentage then giving up ?

No it's Almovodar's second most recent film before 'Volver'. But you're right about the giving up, it gets to 82% and that's that. DVDFab Platinum, which is a registered copy, I tried to use to split the film, but again it would only reach 50%.
The film is a Pathe production, and I've never had any problemss before with Pathe. Sony, OK, everyone expects the occasional problems with them.

Thank you creaky - I'll give that a go. It's irritating that DVDFab doesn't prompt for updates. Never mind.

I downloaded and installed the latest Beta. No dice. So I got a copy of the latest DVDFAB Decrypter. No dice there either. You win some, you lose some ...

Have you examined the disc for smudges, scratches, thumbprints, etc. Might explain why it won't read the disc completely, especially when it hangs at same place in Shrink. DVDFab Plat should be capable of doing anything.

That was my first response, but the disc is mark-free. All the errors I've ever had from Shrink have mentioned a CRC error and, as you say, DVDFab Plat has gone on to back up successfully.
But this time Shrink specifically identified the error as being a problem with the encryption, and both DVD Fab Plat and DVFab Decrypter always failed at the same point - VTS_08_03.
I suppose that with Shrink no longer being supported this will happen more and more frequently.

Thanks again creaky. I've now put in a bid on eBay, so I'll wait and see whether the same problems occur with that copy.

I'm still suspecting the problem is the disc and not Fab. Might have a bad press.

You could very well be right. Certainly it's been very rare that I've had a problem with Fab. Fingers crossed that the eBay copy comes from a different batch.
I appreciate your assistance.

Is this a legit straight from the manufacturer copy? Could you download AnyDVD's free trail and give us the information that is it gives about the disc please?

I've bought over 150 DVDs on eBay, and I've only had bad experiences a couple of times. And when I made a fuss it got sorted out quickly.
I've just bought this brand new copy for 99p (bit of a rip-off on the postage though)and I have no doubts that it will be just fine.
Whether or not I'll have the same copy protection problems remains to be see. I'll keep you updated.

Glad you've had good luck with ebay in the past. The information given by AnyDVD could give us some insight into whether or not the disc is an original or remanufactured.

The eBay DVD turned up on Monday, brand new as advertised. Twenty minutes later I'd run it through Shrink with no problems, and just for interest did it via DVDFab Plat next. No problems of any kind, although it had the same encryption. I can only assume that this was indeed a duff pressing.
Many thanks to everyone who offered advice.
