I am absolutely clueless about the PS3 (more of an pc person) but what is the difference between a Japanese Ps3 and an american ps3? internal components? software? can language be changed?

Japanese PS3's are PAL, while American ones are NTSC.
As for the parts, I'm pretty sure they're the same.

For the Japanese PS3's the X is O and vice versa, and the language can be changed.

Epilogue your wrong. Japanese PS3s are NTSC-J while American PS3s are NTSC-U.

so if i bought a Japanese ps3 and i live in the us will it still work for me? or is there something i need to get it to work?

and whats the main difference between NTSC-J and NTSC-U

About the PSU of the PS3, look here:

Games are universal as far as I know.
