It's normal.
I have a 2GB Memory Stick but it states 1989 MB and not 2048MB-2GB.
Don't worry ;)
My 32 MB Memory Stick states around 30MB.

This is simply because when a storage size ( e.g. 1gb ) is advertised they use 1000 mb's as 1 gb when really 1024 mb's is 1 gb. So if you buy a 1 gb drive it will only actually be 100 mb's not 1 gb. If you need a better explanation just PM me and i'll do some searching for a site with a better explanation.

DC9, yes, that's the same with hard-drives, they advertise 320GB it would be 320000MB not 327680, so you'd loose over 7GB anyway. But there is more lost due to formatting etc. even when there is nothing on the card, some is still taken up.

well the first question is did you buy it used
and my experiences with memorysticks and hard drives i know this its best to format it before it is used and the memorystick can be changed into 3 different types ntfs, fat, fat32 i think it is best to change it to fat32 then format i did this with both of my 4 gigs and i bought them used off ebay and when i first put it im my psp it came up as 3876 i formatted on the computer even though that is not always safe but turned it into a fat32 instead a regular fat drive and recovered 100mb but hard drives are different they cant be turned into different formats just ntfs but some of the space that is missing in memory sticks and hdd are used to identify that it is a hdd or memorystick
For a While i have escaped time but to return when they need you most to come back on a vendetta like a have thats just simply MAGIC!

i didnt do it using the psp as a usb connector but it should work either way you connect it to you computer go to my computer where it would sho that is it connected highlight it then right click and go to properties then format and change the type of format to fat32 and allocation to the highest 1 and then press format and it should take maybe 20 mins but since its a 512 mb maybe 3-5 mins

Looks like you'll just have to get a bigger memory card, i just picked a 4GB up for £35, and in the US they're a little cheaper than that, around $60. Don't get a memory card from ebay though, unless you can be certain they are selling genuine cards.

Considering you bought it from a shop, yes, that's a very good price, i got mine online at www.play.com.
Argos is always very OTT with prices for memory, until the last catalogue revision the 4GB Sony card was £160, only a really stupid person would pay that much.
