So now looking at this I have a feeling it has to do w/ the speed. Thw lowest speed i can choose is 4x but the max speed on the disc is 2.4. U can see from above that the message does mention something about the speed. Does anyone know if there is an update for my dvd drive???

I have a feeling its the shitty Memorex DVD's but im not sure. I might just give them to my dad and purchase Dynex DL DVD as I have never had one prob w/ dynex.

Lets start with your writer.
There are firmware updates avialable.
This may solve the problem alone.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

Next, the shitty Memorex DVD's are not a good choice but may work with the firmware update.
They will never be dependable.
Be nicer to your dad, try to use them.

As to the Dynex media, do not be to sure what you will get.
They just put their name on the box.
They do not make the media.
The disc you are using do not even show the manufacutre code in the log.
That may be corrected by the firmware update.

If you want to be sure what you are getting, buy some Verbatim 2.4x.
If you are paying for dual layer, buy the best.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmed...h+or+List+Media

Just to let you know.
You have Nero v 7.7.5.1
You may want to update/ rollback Nero.

Known to be stable version of Nero v 7.5.9.0a
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/tech/?1901

Lastest version Nero v 7.10.1.0
http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php

If you roll back, you should run the Nero 7 clean tool.

Nero is not likely the trouble this time.

Also watch the memory use.
If you run out while burning, not good.
Do not run too much while burning.

The only DL media brand worth using for Movies is Verbatim. All other brands are deemed inconsistant and undesirable.

The problem is the ND-2510. This is the earliest NEC DL drive, and like all DVD+R DL drives, it does not work well with any DL media. It will not work with DL media rated faster than 4X. The fact that the drive does not even recognize the M-code is an indication that the drive is not going to work properly.

Verbatim DL media are the most compatible ones in the market. Ritek DL is next, and that is what Memorex uses. Both are consistently good quality, but Verbatim has more drive support.

So: 1) it is not the "shitty" discs you are using. They are very good quality but not compatible with your drive. Verbatim DL 8X media will also fail to work on your drive in most probability. That does not make them "shitty" either.

2) Get a newer DL drive with more up-to-date write strategies. The first DL drives were "iffy" in the first place. The latest models are far superior with DL media. Your NEC ND-2510 will never be updated well enough to work properly with DL discs, particularly with data files.

Thanks so much for your insight. I do agree, it is one of the newer DL drives. It even has on the burner 'New technology DL Burinng' LOL

However, do you think a firmware update would do the trick??? I have been surfing the internet for 2 days now, but im so confused on how to find the updates. One posted a link to the updates, but there are soooo many I really dont know where to begin. Plus i know doing firmware updates can be tricky (worst case scenario- dvd burner dies/ gets bricked). I talked to gateway, and they told me the drive is a Sony Double Layer dvd drive. I also have a CD-rom drive ehich i think is made by samsung, but im not positive. Is there any way to find out my burner from the error logs i posted above?

And if som can you provide me a link to the firmware update?
I know that can be some leg-work, but Im so tired of this problem, I would be ETERNALLY grateful for any help you can provide.

Thanks again man, appreciate all hte help so far, u guys rok:)

The hyphen in front of the drive string (the "model name" of the drive) suggests that it is an OEM drive. If I understand you correctly, this is an NEC drive you got in a Gateway computer. That means that Gateway should provide the firmware update unless you want to risk a hack firmware "fix" that changes the drive string to the original NEC drive string. There is always risk in using non-factory software, and this particular drive is the best example. NEC had two models of the ND-2500 with two different laser diodes. One model could be updated with a firmware hack that allowed it to become an ND-2510 that could record DL media. That same non-factory hack turned the other ND-2500 into a doorstop. So many people destroyed their drives that NEC put a warning on its web site that any hacked firmware made the warranty invalid.

I doubt Gateway has a firmware update that will allow you to record many DL media properly, but if you do update the firmware--only use the version Gateway provides. A far better solution is to invest in a new drive such as Lite-on's DH-20A1 or a Plextor drive. I have found those drives to be the best and most reliable in their support of more DL media than just Verbatim, and they record very well on Verbatim, Ritek/Memorex, or RicohJPN (Ritek/Memorex). I think Philips and TDK also use Ritek or RicohJPN versions of DL media. Your ND-2510 was a good drive in its time, but that time has long passed.

hey joe thanks for your support. This dvd burner still burns regular dvd's just fine. Gateway doesnt have any firmware updates for this drive, ask ive asked 2 different tech ppl. I think I just may look into external double layer dvd burners. Even though I have 25 DL discs, i suppose i can burn the files onto 2 different 4.7 discs. I know this drive is outdated, its like an 03/04 model. I tihnk i will take your advice and just leave the drive alone and not flash anything. I think i will look into an external double layer drive via USB as im not smart enough to open up the Pc and swap burners:(

Do you think external dvd burners are ok??? I will also do lots of research on a drive that has the most compability. and ill keep your suggestions in mind

Thansks again:)

External DVD burners are fine as long as they are attached via FireWire or USB 2.0 ports. Memorex made and may still make an external drive that was in an enclosure that has an LED on the back that lights red when the connection is USB 1.1 and green when USB 2.0. I have swapped a lot of Plextor, Pioneer, NEC, Lite-on, and LG drives in and out of that enclosure over the last two years without any problems. It also works great for troubleshooting computers because so many of the early USB 2.0 models had easily accessible USB 1.1 ports on the front of the computer and the faster USB 2.0 ports where hidden on the rear. The LEDs quickly helped in troubleshooting problems.

Both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 will be able to pass signals fast enough for 20X DVD recording, the fastest likely recording speed--and one that should be avoided.
