i have an usb conecter that was used for an external dvd drive it has a sata cable on the end of it could i plug my hitachi 78fk drive into that and then hook it up to the usb slot on my pc to flash the drive. I have no idea how to install a pci card and this seems like a much easier option to me

depends on what firmware you want to use. if you want to install ixreme 1.2rev2 then no, that will not work, seeing as Firmware Toolbox 4.0 is incompatible with usb to sata adapters. you should change the title of this thread, you'll get more help that way ;) change it so something like "hitachi 78 with USB adapter?" or something similar

installing a PCI card is simple enough. you completely powerdown and unplug your computer. then you open it up, and usually where the ethernet/network adapter is plugged in, there will be some slots similar to those slots right next to it. you just line up your PCI card with the slot and give it a nice firm push, it snaps right in. then you screw the piece of metal attached to the PCI card to your PC case where the other cards are attached, you'll see what i'm talking about when you do it. simple enough :D
