Someone gave me a gift of a new PC (Vista, 2gigs ram, 300 gig hd) and I can now backup my DVD collection. Also, I am evaluating a bunch of programs to find the most efficient method. Older DVDs no real problems but it seems that my newest DVDs are consistently producing DVDs that are unplayable in my DVD player; they start out fine and gradually produce image errors and ultimately lock up.

What I am doing: After ripping to my local drive I run FixVTS then I burn to disk. No matter if I use Nero, Roxio, DVDShrink, CloneDVD2 etc. I end up with a dvd that crashes in the DVD player. Ripped files on the computer play fine but once burned I end up with a mess. I have screwed up a lot of DVD-Rs and I am getting REALLY frustrated!!!

Any suggestions, guides, thread links are much appreciated.

What brand of blank media are you using?
check the manufacturer with this free program(also tells you the firmware of your drive)
or you can use nero info tool

also what speed are you burning at?
half of the rated speed is a good place to start with.

also is your firmware up to date?
could be the cause, post make and model bumber of your burner if you need help finding a firmware update

your process before the burn looks good, and i dont think that has to do with your problem, its the burn part

edit
also you dont say what you ripping with, best free ripper for new dvds is DVDFab HD

What brand of blank media are you using? This latest bundle is Maxell DVD+R - I have burned older dvds and they play OK.

check the manufacturer with this free program(also tells you the firmware of your drive)
or you can use nero info tool - I am looking into it now

also what speed are you burning at? - In Nero I selected RECODE and the speed is at MAXIMUM, advanced analysis and High Quality (slow burn) are checked.
half of the rated speed is a good place to start with. - I will try that now

also is your firmware up to date?
could be the cause, post make and model bumber of your burner if you need help finding a firmware update - I just started to read up on the firmware issue - the PC is less than a month old, my guess is it is up to date, but I am not certain.

your process before the burn looks good, and i dont think that has to do with your problem, its the burn part - I Agree, it only occurs with the newest and largest DVD rips

edit
also you dont say what you ripping with, best free ripper for new dvds is DVDFab HD - I have used several programs including DVDFab

I was reading a post regarding ANYdvd - is this another program I need instead of FixVST? If so, does ANYdvd work on VSTs and iso images already on the local pc?

Anydvd is a driver program that takes all the copy protection away from the disk, you can have it running in the background and use nero recode or dvd shrink, plus anydvd also has a ripper that will rip the newer dvds to the HDD,(one of the best programs out there.
it however costs money but it is worth it as many AD members will tell you, you can also try it for free for 15 days at slysoft.com

like i said before DVDFab HD decrypter is the best free ripper out now.

as for the maxell, if they made in Japan, that very good media(compatible), if they are made somewhere else that might be the problem, not as compatible with all burners.
