Converting to mpg format help!

Sorry if I'm not in the right forum. What I'm needing to do is find out how to convert video formats such as .mov, .asf, etc to mpg format or a format that i can use to burn to a dvd/cd and watch on my standalone player. These are video files that I have taken with a home movie camera.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, or a redirect to the correct forum.

I'd recommend trying ConvertXtoDVD:

If you have the Nero suite, you can also try Nerovision.
