Hi folks,
First post, sadly it's a cry for help, but hey we all have to start somewhere, right? I've done various searches and I'm aware that Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the recommended media. I've modded my Wii this week with a WiiKey, I believe its a clone, not sure though. Had to dremel the chip and used the wire install. Anyway, its booting originals fine, but no go with backups or the setup disk. I've tried various media, all cheap, except one Verbatim +R I found, so hoping its my media. My question is really to the UK guys and girls, can you guys tell me what media you've had success with, and maybe where you got them? Also, burning software and your burner model?
I'm using an NEC ND3550A burner, with IMGBurn at 6x.
Thanks in advance folks.

If it is a Wiikey clone then you will need to run the Wiikey set up disc to make the Wiikey clone operable.
You can get the set up disc from the below site...
http://www.wiikey.cn/resources.html
What firmware version are you running on your Wii? Hopefully you haven't updated to the 3.0 firmware version yet. This firmware version has caused issue with running the Wiikey set up disc.
Wiikey owners that have the 3.0 firmware can boot up the Wiikey set up disc by running a GCoS boot up disc first then swap the disc with the Wiikey set up disc.
But if you have to run the Wiikey set up disc first to make the Wiikey clone operable then you won't be able to run the GCoS boot up disc either. So your out of luck untill Wiikey releases a Wiikey set up disc that boots with the new 3.0 Wii firmware.

My Wii is still at work, where we've been modding/testing, so can't confirm firmware until tomorrow, but I'll check that first thing. I've been doing a few more searches on the forum and discovered that a couple of other guys with the same burner as myself had problems, they were able to burn games, but the games died after a few minutes play, so a different burner is on the to do list, admittedly they're using US Wiis, but still its something for me to bear in mind. What I find painful about this whole thing is that there isn't a definitive answer, my chip might not be soldered in correctly, my chip might be duff, my media could be wrong, oh well, what can you expect when you're not really using the Wii as it's meant to be...
Thanks again.

Well I'm currently on firmware 2.2e. I picked up some Verbatim -R's on the way home, burned the WiiKey 1.2 setup disk at 4x with Nero and ImgBurn, still no go... :(
I doubt it'll make any difference, as the Wii isn't reading backup disks, but I'll download the original setup image and try that...
Thanks again for the help.

Just an update and plus some possible food for thought, to potential modders. I managed to get my Wii Chipped in the end. A friend of mine had a go at it, as I think I've mentioned I went the dremel route, so the chip on the DVD drive has been ground away to expose the 3 missing 'legs'. We'll this may have been said a 1000 times before, but what my friend ended up doing was using a stanley knife he gently lifted up the two outside legs so there was more room to work, obviously this could potentially cause them to snap, but it does give you an easier area to solder to.
My other thoughts were towards this bricking business. If you've half bricked your Wii and can only now play games from a particular region, until a new patch for your specific region is released, can you simply re-burn any games that are of the 'wrong' region again to the new region you are bricked into and then be able to play those previously unavailable games again?
Probably been suggested before, but hey you never know. Anyway guys, thanks for your help I'm now a happy chappy!

A semi brick issue shouldn't cause you to not play Imported games. A semi-brick usually means your system settings can not be accessed but all games will still play.
