i downloaded and anti-virus that was infected so instead of deleting the virus i deleted system files.... now i cant use recovery but i have all the safe modes is there any way i can fix it? i cant even use internet explorer, thank god i had firefox. i have windows xp service pack 1

reload xp on top of self to correct the files or do a fresh install of xp

i would do a fresh install after saving any data you want saved. what is the make & model# of your computer or motherboard?

if a name brand computer like dell then will be on front of case, also check user manual. if a clone computer then look at motherboard manual.

All branded (hp,dell etc) models come with a recovery partition instead of a windows disk if it's an hp hold f10 down on restart

some models on the boot screen will have the recovery option you'll see at bottom of screen which keyboard key to push,failing that read the manual for recovery options or just go thru the programs list looking for wording like recovery options etc or non branded what DDP said

if your hd is not 1 of the quantums listed then nothing as xp should pick up all devices.

yes. is the xp cd from ms or dell. if from dell then it is probably a recovery cd so it will put everything back to when you 1st got the computer. what anti-virus program are you using as dell might have old version of norton or mcaffee?

nope. you need either the cd or recovery disk(s) to reload windows.
