Gameshark CDX not work on PS2?

I've got an urge to play some old PS1 games again, and want to use my Gameshark CDX for codes. But every time I try to use it on my PS2, it freezes before I even get a chance to apply the cheats and boot the game. People around here have said PS1 Gamesharks work with the PS2, is the CDX (disc with memory card addon) an exception? I've got one of the old PS2s, not a slim one.
