The blue screen of death is for corrupt settings. Not sure what the red screen of death is for though.
lol. BSOD is where your PSP has either lost it's settings or are corrupted. There is a homebrew app, I wish I could remember the title, that backs up your settings, which are stored in flash1, so after you flash your PSP (up or downgrade), you can run the program and all your previous settings are restored.
The RSOD, however, is very rare. It means that your PSP is stable enough to tell you that your PSP is corrupt or needs to have a Sony Technician repair the system, but corrupt enough that the system won't load the bootstrapper (the piece of code that dictates the order in which it boots). Ex with CFM: Reocvery, flash0 system critical files, flash1 system settings files, bootup process (your PSP actually does a self-diagnostic test to ensure flash stability), and then it is passed off to the XMB.
If you get a RSOD, I believe that a Sony Tech would load a special memory stick that the PSP could boot to that would identify the corrupt/missing system critical files and replace them. Some people claim that Sony has leaked this software, jigkits, the unbricking battery, etc. I personally have not come across such software, but I keep looking.
