Hey, I have been on a 2 year hiatus from the modding scene and need help getting back up to speed. I have been looking into getting an xbox 360 but I cant seem to find the info I need to figure out which xbox 360 and chipset to buy and if it is anything like a modded xbox with the new dashboard and ability to store homebrew on the HDD. Also if that huge raid on the modchip places had any affect on the scene. Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere.

well, it is not at all like the old Xbox. A modded 360 will do only one thing, play back up games. Nothing else can be changed. You can buy a larger hard drive or buy dashboards (themes) from Xbox Live Marketplace.
And yes the raids have effected the scene. A lot of places have just plain shut down.

I heard about some sort of firmware hack.. where you dont need a chip.. whats the deal with that

yeah you just load use sata to change the firmware of the disc drive, but in most cases youl need the via 6421 chipset. atm you can get online with the firmware but who knows when microsoft will be able to ban with this firmware, as they have done with an earlier one

i woudnt call it lame its just not massively in depth, though there has been a bit of a breakthrough today, a simple version of linux was able to run on an earlier kernel but most people found out once it thy had updated... but...

There have been a lot of hacks in the firmware department. Just recently people were able to find a way to downgrade your dash kernel so you could use the hypervisor exploit in a vulnerable kernel to run homebrew. if you search the forums you can find info on the King Kong hypervisor exploit. Most hackers see this as the most promising exploit towards homebrew and linux.

I cant even imagine the knowledge...time... and patience.. it takes to do all this stuff.. It must be really hard with considering that the x360 has so many updates and is tied up with live..
