Which PVR/DVR can I use for freeview the dump HDD files to PC?

Thinking of getting a DVR to record shows I miss but would like to then pop the drive in my PC and transcode directly to XVID. Are the disk structures compabile with the PC (NTFS/FAT32) or do they play funny buggers with it to stop this kind of thing.
