i have a 360 that has the hacked firmware. im not sure what firmware i have on it because my friend usually flashes for me. i know the last time it was flashed was right after the game crackdown came out. so basicly my question is will microsoft be able to tell the my conole has hacked firmware. if not how do i get on. do i just plug in an internet connection and follow some steps?

you need high speed internet, not dial up.
live will run you around 50 bucks a year but you can get a 30 day trial when you first set up the account.
