DVD Drive Can't Recognize DVD-R

Hello dear forum members,
I have an IBM ThinkPad T5600 (Lenovo) laptop
Windows XP
CD/DVD Recorder: Matshita DVD RAM UJ-842
I have a DVD-R that plays fine on my standalone DVD player. However, If I try to play it on the laptop, the recorder doesn't recognize it and a window pops up as if the media was blank.
Do you know how can I make the recorder recognize it?

Thanks for the link - I didn't install it yet. The page only has a firmware update for Matshita DVD RAM UJ-842Sand i own a UJ-842. However, I found this page from Sony's web site for the UJ-842 .
How should I know if it's safe to update using this firmware?

just make sure your model number matches up and your good to go.
close out all programs ,make sure the drive is empty, download the firmware , reboot and your should be fine

yes that works or click "My Computer" right click the drive go to "Properties" click the "hardware" tab

I know you would think WMP would play a movie,but I had a problem like yours on a PC I built for a friend it did not play backup movies,I installed Nero 6 with their movie player and then it worked just fine

Hey guys I'm getting the same problem. I can't install the firmware found here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-dow...id=2375&os_id=7
because it says it's not intended for my computer model. Anyone have any clue what to do? It worked like a week ago with the same exact cds. I tried different ones but to no avail...

Just a thought, but are the disc/disc's clean? might just be a thumb print. like i said just a thought....

Firmware for most of the Matshita drives come targeted for the OEM computers they are installed in, as you've just found out.
Matshita drives are also fickle, some days they'll read fine, the next they won't. I've heard they are fickle on media also. I've got one so I'm speaking from experience.
