KXploit is the first way homebrew was really easily available on PSP. It was evolved from the Swaploit, which involved 2 memory sticks and a quick hand. What the KXploit is is 2 folders, 1 with the game name and the other with the game name and a % (i.e. game and game%). The regular folder with an EBOOT which contains the IMAGE.PNG and something to make the PSP boot the program. After said boot, the folder with a % kicks in and boots the program.
The unpatched version is for PSP's with firmware 1.00, which doesn't require the KXploit to boot homebrew. You don't need to bother with that, unless you are on 1.00 or custom firmware 1.53 which runs some 1.00 EBOOTS.
