A friend of mine is worried about modding their Wii. They heard from one of their friends that apparently you can't get updates for the system or download/purchase virtual console games anymore if you mod your Wii. I have tried to ensure him that this is not the case and all the modchip does is alters the drive only to allow for reading of normal dvdr's.

Is this a correct assumption? So i can tell him to relax lol.

the wii can be modded and you can not only update the firmware of the chip, but also update the firmware of the console. Yes you can still access the store, internet channel, etc.

So I am correct in stating that the modchip only alters the ability for the drive to read store bought dvdr's?

Yeah. The chip is strictly used to allow the reading of a backup of a game. You cans till play all originals fine, but with it, if you backup games, the chip actually allows the game to be played. If you're looking into it, I would recommend wiikey. I have it in mine, and I have not had any problems with it.
