Ive been using firmware 3.40 OE-A for 3 months and playing games no problem from the memory stick. However, yesterday, it stopped playing any games from my memory stick and gave an error code for no UMD inserted. I tried playing the game on the UMD inserted and it wouldn't play that either.

It sounds like its just given up reading the UMD inserted.

Is my machine had it? Is it to do with the firmware?

Its still under guarantee!!!

Thanks for reading

Go into recovery and try to enable NO UMD which will let you play an ISO game from MS without a UMD in the bay. Not all games are compatible with this mode in 3.40 OE-A.

If you want better NO UMD compatibility I would go with 3.52 M33.

To get into recovery to set the NO UMD option hold the R shoulder button down while turning on the PSP. You should boot into a recovery menu. The setting should be under configuration.

When you insert a UMD normally, can you play the UMD? Or can't it start?

If it won't run, then a short term fix would be upgrade to 3.52 M33-4 and use the built in M33 no-UMD driver, it'll work with nearly any game. But, it sounds like your laser might have had it... though sometimes it's simply that it's just not in the correct position, i saw a guide ages ago about nudging the laser track gently towards the central spindal with a pen. Not sure if it would work or not, make sure you don't touch the actual laser.

EDIT: larrylje kinda beat me with the no-UMD advice :P

First, before you send it off, create a Pandora battery! You'll need it afterwards as they'll upgrade to 3.52.

if it comes back with official sony 3.51 and up you will need to use the pandoras battery method to downgrade it,3.50 you can use the unpatched lumines method to downgrade oh and when they repair it you may find yourself with a bill from whoever repaired it because messing with the flash can void the warranty
http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=107553
for the pandoras battery download from the link above this is the easiest way to make the pandora's battery so download and save to your pc once you have found someone with 1.50 or cfw you can create your battery

So you're in the UK, where about? I could create one free for you... you'd need to send the battery + mem stick though.
