when i have finsihed downloading a avi file what is it i have to do next to get it to play on stand alone dvd players

First you'll have to convert it to DVD MPEG2 file. You can do it with TMPEGEnc. A guide for that is here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgencdvd.htm

Then you'll have to author a DVD Video disc which you can then burn. You can do that with TMPEGEnc DVD Author. A guide for this is here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/172123.php
