Could updates stop u completely from playing backups?

Hi I was wondering if the updates from microsoft could totally prevent you from playing backups on the 360 , meaning could they unflash your firmware or something like that ? or does it only stop you from going on XBL ? , cuz i really dont care about XBL so that doesnt matter to me.

could someone pls help me out with this question.

so is being able to continue playing on XBL the only reason that people change their firmware?
meaning you could keep your old firmware and still play new games (retail or backup)?
