So just to be clear, backups meaning movies cannot be played back either correct? Or is it that you cannot play them on the PS3. I always see Blue ray rips, I guess they are all coming from PCs?

Actually they can be played, warhawk and gt5 have been loaded from a hard drive, they should update this thread.

Hes just going off more recent again unconfirmed rumors of backups being playable. There's a thread around here somewhere on it, but again its unconfirmed so as far as we're concerned backups still cant be played until they make their info public for better or worse.

On second thought he could have misinterpreted what our meaning of backups were and thought that because you can play gt5:p and warhawk with just game data that its a backup.

I am really only interested in Movie backups/rips or whatever I should call them. basically, I want to be able to rip the blu ray movie and play it back on the PS3. It would also be nice to get the .iso off the ps3 to playback on a PC but that is only so I could archive it. I plan to put a big hard drive in the PS3 anyway.

I just want to run GTAIV off the hard drive...it needs mods/expansions.

I would even be happy with a hack that still requires the orriginal Blu-ray from the game to be played; so long as I can mod the game (and maybee reduce wear on the laser).

Because they are two completely different systems.

Sony learnt from there mistakes with the PS2 and PSP, The Ps3 is VERY secure, and the security is constantly being updated with the firmware updates.

You are correct, however the files are useless as nothing can be done with them, also you have to realise the protection on the PS3 is quite strong, nothing has yet been able to get past the HyperVisor.

Also even if it where possible to mod the PS3 with PS2 homebrew that would leave a vast amount of PS3 users without a moded PS3,as the 40GB and new 80GB have no PS2 emulation which would be needed.

i guess that'd be their loss. you also have to consider that people want it badly because some people just can't afford 60 dollars for every game.

$60 isnt a great amount of money.
Where i live they are $80 and there are countries where the games are $160,simply if you cant afford the games dont buy the console, you also have to consider that Sony makes nothing on the sale of the console, all their profits are tied to the sale of games.

I do want a modded/hacked PS3 and not for piracy but for homebrew.

listen i feel and sort of felt the same way. Sony loses a lot of money on making a PS3 but those costs are slowly coming down. their only means of making money is software. thats why i modded my 360 so i could play the multiplatform games i didn't feel like wasting money on, and i hate the 360 so i don't burn any of its exclusives. if homebrew came to the ps3, it would still create a loader of some sort fore sure. i personally like playing mario on my ps3 for fun and having swap magic helps.

Well, contrary to what marcusita said, I think $60 is quite a bit for a game, but I also understand the reasoning behind it. That said, wanting a hack for the PS3 just because you can't afford a game is just plain idiotic. First of all, that begs the question of why you bought the PS3 in the first place. Secondly, it also makes some folks wonder if you really just stole the PS3 instead of buying it, because you could apply the same reasoning to that - you "hacked" someone's front door lock to get their PS3 because you couldn't afford your own PS3. Thirdly, that same reasoning could then be applied to anything in life - you stole someone's wallet because you couldn't afford to get a job and get your own money.

...but I digress.

I'm wondering if that PS3 ECC thing will be any good, because it'd be cool to finally be able to play my PS1 backups. That's where I could see homebrew being effective, because... y'know, those games ARE pretty old, and it'd be disheartening to see them all go through even more wear and tear. Most PS2 games I'm sure would still work pretty well, but a ten-year old CD would undoubtedly be destroyed.

It wont lead to anything, devs at ps3news and ps3hax are great but theses finds are just small and wont really lead anywhere.

Just face it, PS3 WILL NOT GET HACKED, and if it does, it wont make a difference, because required Firmware updates will always win.

The PS3 at some stage will be hacked and firmware updates wont make one bit of difference once it has been hacked.

Also loads of people dont update their firmware, they can do what they want with PS3 proxy.

Well I got both my PS3 and 360 for free of the internet. Second, there are so many good PS3 games coming out it's not even funny and I also want to sell my Xbox 360. I personally loved homebrew on PS2 and I think it'd be great considering the amount of potential for possibilities there are with the system's abilities.

Couple of ways you can get a "free" PS3.

One these referral sites. I've decded to try one out, got my last referral a couple weeks ago, placed my order and it says delivery will take place next business day; it's been over a week now :P So either they have run out of stock or trying to hold out. Already knew these sites will do anything to try to prove you broke their rules etc so they dont need to give you one.

Second and what works, but you get a refurbised console, is to take out a phone contract where they give you a PS3 etc instead of cashback. I did this thinking it'd be easier selling the PS3 then claiming or even forgetting to send for the cashback. I got my PS3 1 month after I receved my phone, it's refurbished but it works. (i decided to keep it than sell it :P )

So if you need to renew your mobile contract soon, try looking for one that gives you a PS3 with it.

I agree that $60 isn't alot of money these days, but when so many great games come out so often the money can add up fast. I'v bought 5 games in the last month, do the math. Also I think companies like sony rarly lose money. If they say the lost money this year it just means they didn't make a much as the reports said they would at the begining of the year said they would. Also what if you buy a game at full price and you don't like it, and what about so many many game that are ok but not quite worth $60 but maybe still worth buying at a lower price. But I supose that you can't realy sell games with the price based on how good they are because everybody has differen taste. Maybe lower all game prise just a little or start a frequent buyers club; i.e. buy x amount, get X amount free.

Just sharing my thoughts,
John

Yeah, I agree. If Sony put out 1 game a year that was worth it, $60 would be nothing. But This Fall's lineup has me finding where I can cut back. I've only purchased Burnout at full price. I've bought shooters/fighting games used on Amazon, played the heck out of them for a few monhts and then re-sold them again, losing only $10. $10 for a 4-month rental is pretty good IMO. Sports games, well, I get those used also, like 6 months later when you can find them for $30 cheaper. And there are games that my friends and I swap back and forth. But I recently put LBP on pre-order (my second game at full price). And there are a few more coming out that I may not have the patience to wait for. It adds up fast. $300 for 5 games....lol. Not gonna happen. After LBP, I'm done for the year paying $60/game. Come January/February, I'll start looking on Amazon for used Fall 08 releases.

Way off topic....

Back on topic....WE NEED HOMEBREW!!! We need independant 3rd parties developing software for the PS3.
