I have an original PS2 ver. 4 and a slim version. I want to connect a hard drive w/ enclosure via USB. Which counsel and what programs will ensure the best compatibility. I have been doing some research and it seems Usb Extreme has a lot of compatibility issues. I believe Swap magic 3.6 allows you to load games from a usb device but only up to 4 games and I don't know how compatible it is. If you guys have any other programs to mention or any suggestions please let me know.Thanks.

usb extreme is the only program that can load games off a usb hdd.
Swap magic can play back up games on cd/dvd, but also loads homebrew programs from usb drives/cd/dvd/memcard, but not games...
In my opinion usb extreme/advance suck :)
Its best to download a copy of usbexteme, and use swap magic to boot it.
OH well the best way is actually a modchip but yeah, if u dont wanna mod you system that is.
If you have an old ps2, then an internal HDD is the way to go./

The reason I didn't want to use an internal HDD with the old PS2 was because I didn't want to purchase the network adapter. I already have a hard drive and enclosure. I think I'm going to buy the adapter, go w/ Swap magic 3.6 and use that to boot Hdloader. Thanks for the input.

you will definatately love the internal hdd better :)
And since your getting swap magic, you can still experiment with usbextreme/advance by downloading a copy off the net and booting that.

Hey do you know anything about independence exploit? Is there any way to transfer an exploit DIRECTLY to a memory card using ftp. My slim version has networking capabilities.I read something about transferring it to the HDD first but not directly. Also, if you need the HDD as a middleman, can you use one attached by a usb. This is prob a simple question, but I really have no idea. Thanks

The problem is that you would have to run a ftp client on the ps2 first?
How would you be able to do that without swap magic etc?
If you have a way of booting a backup, then its most probly best just to burn the exploit to cd and install it as its waay easier that way.
But in your question, i guess you can ftp the correct files to the memory card if you can get ftp setup first.
You dont need to worry about a hdd if you are trying to install the exploit. Just need a ps1 game.

he tells us that he have the slim version so he have no chance to use the independence exploit cause this option won`t work on the slim ps2`s!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS2_Independence_Exploit
copy`nPaste : The exploit on newer consoles
The PS2 Independence Exploit does not work on newer Slim (V12) models (see PlayStation 2: Hardware revisions), since the buffer overflow has been corrected, although there are alternatives [1].
So the only chance to play backup`s will be Action Replay(tutorial: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view....vance(original)
Swap(original and a copy of usbadvance)or an ordinary chip
i have to say that the compatibility of usbadvance really sucks
look at : http://www.ps2hd.com/list/
boot your backups via swap or buy a chip

Yeah I know it won't work for the Slim version but I also have an original Ver. 4 PS2. Since the Slim version has the network adapter built in, I was wondering if I could transfer the exploit to the Memory Card and then use the MC in my original and boot w/ a PS1 game. I don't have a network adapter for the original pS2. I don't think it will work though.
