Hello, I dont have a ps3 yet, im still saving up, and was wondering can you connect the ps3 to your internet connection by using just a network adapter? because I can connect a network adapter fine but i've had problems connecting a router to my pc which even my ISP can't resolve and I would like to use the internet functions on the ps3 to download updates, demos, play online etc.
Thanks.

any specific type of network card? I live in the UK so there are probably different brands in america. Also my ps3 will be upstairs on the second floor of my house where the living room is, will I have to run a cable all up the stairs? can you even get wires that long? Thanks

whats the problem with your router maybe we can help?
if you on virgin media there crap at resolving issues i tried to ring them to get the dns address n they said they couldnt give it to me cus it was against there policy!!!
n yeah you can get cable that long i got a 100m ethernet cable.
if you cant fix the router problem and get a long cable you could hook the modem up to your pc with a usb and the hook the ps3 to the ps3 with ethernet all you gotta to is bridge the connections.

I posted a topic about my router a while back, and noone could help although I appreciated their time and effort. I was advised to contact my isp, which led to nowhere.
So to get my ps3 online I will need to get another network card, connect an ethernet cable to the ps3 to this new card and bridge the connection. This will probably half my pcs connection speed right? My family wont be too happy about that.
So can you recommend any good network cards and what price they usually go for. I use ebay quite alot, so ill search a bit on there.
Thanks.

Just get a standard NIC, should be about £10. It wont necessarily halve your connection - its just the same as using a router, its just your PC becomes the router instead.

Ah ok thanks you've been a great help. So any standard network card will do and good to hear there cheap and that it wont really halve the connection.

Sorry for the double post, but what length do you think id need?
my pcs downstairs and my ps3 will be in the living room which it up one flight of stairs on the first floor of the house. Im no good with measurements and lengths and stuff but I dont think ill need 100m maybe 30m or something? I found a 30 meter cable for ps3 on ebay for cheap but dont know whether to buy it or not.

it would be best to do some measurements save making a mistake on the length, just get a long piece of string or thread n run it from your pc to your ps3, then get a tape measure and measure a meter on the string and fold it at the point the meter ends. keep folding until you reach the end and you'll have the length, primitive i know but it works!
also run the thread against the skirting boards you'll want to hide the long cable under the carpet.

Ok ill do that :D Actually now that I look at where the cable is going to have to go, im gonna need a long long cable! All round the skirting boards and stuff. One more question, if I connect my ps3 up like this, using an ethernet cable, will it be slower or faster than if I was using wireless with a router?

The connection will be more stable using wired than wireless.

Sorry one very last question now. Would my pc have to be on for my ps3 to be able to access the internet? Someones normally on the pc anyway so it shouldn't mattter too much but was just curious.
I have a second network card now and have fiqured out how to bridge connections, its all fairly easy really isnt it? So now I just need a cable , ill just get 50m to be safe, and of course a ps3.
Thanks.

Yes it would have to be as it would work as a middle man for the connection. Personally ive had no issuses between using wireless and a wired connection and that much cable can diterirate the signal and not to mention be a hassle and a pain to keep in place. I'd just put a wireless card in the computer instead of a nic they are about 60 bucks canadian and easy to install. It would save you alot of headaches.

Would I need an access point for my ps3 to access the card or would it go from card to ps3 without an access point? I just looked on ebay and there cheaper than I thought they would be.
