I'm thinking of getting a new one to replace my 256 MB one. If it's fake, does that mean games and stuff wont work at all? Or does that mean it's just not genuine?

it means it's just not genuine there are two types

1:the good ones which work fine
2:4gb ones that somehow trick your psp into thinking they are 4gb it will even fool your computer but you will find that it is just a 1gb card
try and avoid the 2nd one if possible
