Hey... I'm new to using custom firmware so I was wondering two things... One should I backup my saved game data somewhere? If so where and how? And two I've heard of it possible causing a brick. What is a brick and how would I fix it if that happens?

yes, backup the savedata because sometimes you might have to format the memory stick. in MS:\psp, there's a savedata folder. just copy it to your computer desktop.
as for bricking, you will not brick if you follow instructions. a brick is when your psp will not boot. the power light will be on, but nothing else happens.
to fix a bricked psp, you would need pandora's battery and magic memory stick. those two are created on a psp running custom firmware.

Ok... soo I'm now getting to be even dumber. I thought I had figured this out, but I haven't so I need more help. I can't figure out how to get the custom firmware onto my PSP. Actually... I can't even find a place to download it. Or atleast I can't find one that'll let me play PSX ISO files...

Before we help you with installing custom firmware tell us what firmware you are on so we know if you can install the custom firmware or not.

You will need a copy of Lumines plus you will need to update to 3.50 to downgrade to 1.50.
Here is a GUIDE on how to do this. Look at the first section -3.10 - 3.50 Any Motherboard.
