Not to be a moron here but how will you be able to tell if your dvd drive can read these games? Is it simply by putting the games in it and see if it reads them or not? Or do you have to put them in and try to rip the games? And if so, with what?

I do not own a Wii or have any Wii games but do have a Gamecube and games.

I have these:

Pioneer DVDRW, etc. DVD-112D PIO-DVR-112 (B)
Lite-On DVDRW SHM-165H6S

Can anyone let me know and I will test it out and see what they do for all to know.

Thanks,

Flandrel

ok so I just got my wii modded with a D2C key. Now my question is do I need to have those cd drives as listed? to copy games?? and by copying games I mean as in burning a copied version of say mario galaxy. doesn't matter if its original or copied either or. Now next question is can't I simply put the copied game (DVD) into the cd drive and simply copy the cd? please get back to me. Thanks

ok I went to the ebay page and now have some questions. Since my computer has vista and is an emachine will any of the drives not work? Does any drive that has 816 mean it will work? Is 8164 better than 8160? Is there anything else you think i should know? Also I want to get a wiikey so does the drive have to say +R since that's what the wiikey reads?

THE DRIVES YOU LISTED ABOVE DO YOU SEE THEM ON THE LIST?

Has anyone ever ACTUALLY gotten a successful dump with a GDR-8160b? People have mentioned that rawdump recognizes wii discs in this drive, but for one cannot complete the dump using my 8160. It is also not working with friidump. I have tried in a few computers with no luck. I have tried the PIO only trick AND I have tried every version of RawDump that I could get my hands on. I only got this model drive because there are several mentions of this drive working and being the best value. Can someone help, please?

They are all manufactured by LG Electronics or H-L Data Storage, but are sold under various brand names (see the list below). The specific drive models that have been reported to work are 8160, 8161, 8162, 8163, 8164.

Also, reported to work is SATA LG GDR-H10N by user culius and MacBook Pro MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E by user bahhrito6. Thanks to Wiible for testing the 8160B

eBay search for all drives: Wii/GameCube DVD-ROM Backup Drives

(Also check the Buy It Now items)

Google product search for all drives: Wii/GameCube DVD-ROM Backup Drives.

Note: Brand names of 816* drives that have been confirmed:

LG Electronics
Hewlett Packard (HP)
Hitachi
H-L Data Storage
Compaq
Sony
IBM
Teac
Gateway
Goldstar

The above brands are all made or licensed by LG Electronics and they just have the different brand stickers on them. Many even have the LG logo right on the front like this:

Caution: watch out for the similarly modeled, CRD-816* CD drives. You want a DVD-ROM not a CDR.
From all these drives, how can I find a drive that will read my Wii original and burn my iso file after I backed up my game? I want a read/write DVD drive. Which is it? Will the GDR-8161B work?

those drives are ONLY readers
all the ones that uou listed will only read the games and dump them onto ur computer.

u need Another drive that burns dvds(it can be ANY dvd burner)
but u need the specific dvd drives that uou listed or else it wont read the wii /gamecube games.

I have picked up 2 different drives at work. I have used the gdr-8162b and the gdr-8163b. Both of these drives were recognized by rawdump and ripped wii games flawlessly. I see a lot of redundant questions on here. To clear it up. You need a DVD-ROM drive to rip the disc to your hard drive using rawdump or friidump. You have to have one of the DVD-ROM drives made by LG. Once you have an image of the game you ripped, then you can burn it using a DVD burner. So you will need 2 differnt drives to rip and burn a Wii game. It worked for me. Good Luck and have fun.

ironic calling these questions redundant
when u tell us the drives neeed to be from LG, no that is false they can be any other manufac that uou mentioned.

anyways
heres another stupid question
my comp doesnt recognize the dvd-drive
i have an hitachi 8163b. do i need drivers for it? if so where do i get it?

All those drive mentioned earlier are made by LG and sold under those other manufacturers names. So yes as of now the Rawdump software only works with LG dvd-rom drives. I am hearing that others are having luck with other Hitachi drives, but I cannot comment on that because I dont own one. Only models gdr-8160 - gdr-8164 are working. I like how people correct a person giving advice when they are having problems themself. As far as your computer not recognizing the drive.... It could be the jumper settings. One drive has to be set to slave and the other has to be set to master and they have to be attached to the appropriate connector on the ide cable. A dvd-rom drive is plug and play and has the needed sofware already on it, so if your computer doesnt recognize it.....you havent installed the drive properly.

So it has to be an actual LG drive? I cannot use an HL? Many of the threads I have read in the past said that LG, HL, and Hitachi will all work because they all use a Hitachi controller. Plus, they are all really made by LG. In fact the one I bought was using a link to an eBay search which I found in a thread on this site. Has anyone had success with an HL?

Firmware can be updated in a matter of minutes if it's available, have you searched? Also post the firmware versions that are confirmed to work if you know them. Thanks.

I have searched high and low, but the only firmware update I could find for the 8160 was a region code hack. I doubt that will help, but maybe I should try...

Does anyone know of where I could find an 8160 firmware update? Otherwise, does anyone have information on how to get a successful dump using an 8160? Wiible? The rumor is that you pulled it off...

If you read the first post, you would see that Wiible had success with the 8160. You could also click his name and PM him. You could also click the 8160 link after his name to see his post.

Are you sure you have a DVD-ROM only? Sure it's an LG or GDR-8160 and not a GCE-8160 or a CRD-8160? Do you have .net Framework 2.0 installed? Is the drive's firmware up to date? What is the exact brand, model and firmware version you have?
