And the firmware version is? Are you sure the drive even works with regular discs?

I wrote earlier that all the drives rip at about the same speed - slow, which is true, but here's something many of you might find interesting. I have four different models, so I went ahead and tested them all by ripping the exact same disc to the exact same hard drive. Guess what! The older models actually rip slightly faster, even though they are lower DMA speeds:
8162B Ultra DMA 2 2599MB/hour 32:08
8161B Ultra DMA 2 2554MB/hour 32:42
8163B Ultra DMA 2 1902MB/hour 43:55
8164B Ultra DMA 3 1780MB/hour 46:57
Enjoy that tip! :)
Pay less, get a faster rip.

I do not know what my firmware revision is. I cannot find a utility to update the firmware so I cannot see what the revision is. Is there another way to find out what the firmware revision is? Do you know something about the firmware for these drives? What should the firmware revision be? The drive revision is A0 (it is printed on top, I am not sure if that is relevant).
Yes, I am able to read other discs (CDs, DVDs, etc) with the drive with no problems.

The number after the model number is the firmware version.

In that field I have the code 0009. I think I will try that dvd region hack. It is the only firmware I could find for this drive. It just may be a newer version. If you have any other info on where to find a firmware revision for a GDR-8160B please let me know. Thanks. :)

Can my Nintendo Wii still get bricked if I play a PAL game in it when it is a NTSC Wii, and I update it? For example if my wii (NTSC) is not chipped, and I try to play super paper mario(PAL), does my wii still have a chance at getting bricked?

If your Wii does not have a modchip it will not play any burnt games. It will just not recognize the disc, so your wii wont get bricked. However your wii may get bricked for not reading the forums and asking stupid questions.

You CAN'T play out-of-region games on an unmodded Wii... wtf, why are you asking these questions on this thread?
But what I want to know is... do 8160B drives actually work? It seems like that it doesn't...

k thanks, and 1860b doesnt work.
By the way, can my wii get bricked if I have a wiikey, and I only stick to burning games that are in my region, and I have the latest update for the wiikey which is 1.9g.
THANK YOU

Also I want to get a wiikey so does the drive have to say +R since that's what the wiikey reads?
just bringing back what I wrote.

I have an 8160B, thinking it'd work. It doesn't. EVERY time I try to "start dump," I get a "faulty drive" error. Pisses me off. So I'm on the quest for a 8161-8164

Yep. I got screwed there too. 8160's don't work. I could not get wiible to reply and tell us how he pulled it off. So, before anybody else has problems like this, I am going to make sure everybody knows: GDR-8160b DOES NOT WORK USING ANY VERSION OF RAWDUMP, OR FRIIDUMP, ON ANY SYSTEM. YOU WILL EITHER GET A "FAULTY DRIVE" ERROR, OR A GENERAL ERROR. AND NO, SETTING YOUR IDE CONTROLLERS TO PIO ONLY DOES NOT WORK, AND GEE, NEITHER DOES RAWDUMP 0.4. Sorry for the caps, but I want make sure no one else spends money on an 8160. :)
On a happier note, I got my 8161 yesterday and it works like a charm.

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Well then, until I get at least another confirmation that the 8160 works, I will remove it. If you have an 8160B that either DOES or DOES NOT work please post your exact brand, model number and firmware version! Otherwise, it's not very helpful. It could be that only a certain firmware works. If that's the case, we can locate or dump that firmware and post it to solve the problem.
Firmware version:

UOU,I have tested 4 8160's. None of them work. There is no firmware revision, because LG and Hitachi never released any firmware for the drive (I searched high and low). However, there are DRIVE REVISIONS which are printed on top of the drive. I personally tested Drive revisions A0, A1, and A2. None of them work. I hope this helps. :)

Ps: Mine were all H-L drives. Which (in case you did not know) stands for Hitachi and LG, which is their brand used for OEM released products, so when you see Compaq, and HP, and Gateway, and etc, you are looking at an H-L drive with a different sticker. The retail version would be LG. Those are going to be few and far between, but honestly, considering they are still manufactured by LG, and still use the same Hitachi controller, I do not think you are going to see any difference. :)

You might even try flashing 8161-8164B firmware onto the 8160. Just make sure to save your current firmware first, so you can flash back if it does not work. Also when flashing you usually want to have the drive on it's own IDE cable as the Master with nothing else.

I'm not sure how "high and low" you searched for 8160B firmware, but this turned up as the first result of 24,900 in Google...

Before you're going to preach at someone for not googling... the links you provided are for the LG DRD-8160B, not the GDR-8160B. They're not the same drive. And the DRD-8160B does NOT work with Rawdump.
Thanks for trying, though.
