Good Luck in the coming months with that model then!
We are all on here to share info with other people to help then out.
Some people like to read on these forums for valuable info possibly, doesnt really help when people argue back and forth so hopefully we can all learn including myself!
I simply said i personally havent had alot of luck with that model at all,you however had!
Gdr 8162b are not in MY opinion reliable dumpers the faster a drive reads the more likely it is to incur errors, there is probably a good reason why LG slowed the read speed of its latter produced drives, purely for longetivity and reliability.
Even the GDR H10N are slow readers(Only firmware 0B10 in my testing as they are the only drives i have ever tested)
I think 0F03 was another possible GDR H10N Raw Dump capable drive i havent tested this as stated though.

Cecy,
Yep, that sounds about right...
The laser itself is worth about $12 though......
I've got a working laser here for one of my faulty ones...
quite a quick swap out and a very cheap drive if you get the right faulty drive... 'IF'
Some people have no idea what the drives are worth though....

Hey all, ive just got a GDR-8082N0007 which i bouth to use purely as a usb wii reader, but it cant read games in usb mode, from what i have read this is because the of it having the 0007 firmware (is this right brightspk?) So i tried to get the 0C07 firmware but the links are dead so im wondering, do i have to use LG firmware? and where can i get it from, also is the firmware the reason i cant ripp the wii games? If anyone can help with these question that would be greatly appreciaited especially if someone knows where i can get the 0C07 firmware. Cheers

Might be, sounds like a toshiba drive....
I suggest flashing the ibm firmware....
You need to use a command line arg to force the flash onto the drive
The flash program knows its not a IBM firmware release so normally won't let you flash...
You need to do it in dos...
You do it at your own risk, it might 'ruin' you drive !
https://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?brandind=5000008&lndocid=MIGR-53356
I'm trying to remember the argument, but carn't.....
I did post this on http://forum.rpc1.org though....

Screw DVD drives, seriously. Just get a USB Gecko and have a multi-use tool for cheaper. I use mine to create backups and to create and run cheat codes and capture screenshots and all kinds of other cool stuff. I'm sick of hearing about people looking for these overpriced drives that are essentially worthless in comparison.

Yes it does do dual layer backups. The new firmware has a really nifty cheat engine as well as memory dump. All you need is the freeware to compare the dumps and you can make your own codes for your games. They have a website where you can check it all out. Google usb gecko and it is the first link (the most obvious url, but due to not wanting to post links I won't write it out). You can check out the support forums and check the scene out as well as check some of the guides on the download page. I love mine, made MANY successful copies and all work fine. Takes a little over 2 hours to rip and has a lot more to offer. Check it.

Hope you mean GDR-8162B ?
Yes, it will work from a USB enclosure...
It may be a little slower though... USB speed e.g. 1.0,1.1 or 2.0
will determine the performance

Hi just thought i would let everybody here know that i have tested 2 more gdr h10n with 0b10 firmware and can confirm they both also work fine with the iso correctly being the right size (4,699,979,776 bytes)
Also dont forget to try the new rawdump Version 2.1 this version should have better support for new dual layer wii games and external enclosures!

Just got my GDR-8163B. The firmware on it is 0B30. Tried 3 different games to back-up and have had no luck. Either I get a JIT error or just error and restart program screen. Could this be due to my firmware? I have searched and have not seen any mention of this version anywhere. If it is, where do I locate older firmware and instructions.

Hi from memory it could be a net framework error
Have you got net framework installed (2.0),if you have try uninstalling net framework (3.0), if you have that then try rawdump again.
Just a thought.

Just got a GDR-8161B. Now the problem is getting it to work! Have a Dell PC with only SATA slots and running Vista, so looking for either adaptors or an external enclosure. Everything external I find seems not to be Vista-compatible and now unsure whether I'll have similar issues if I go the internal route. Any suggestions, links or advice? Thanks from a newbie - will do my best to contribute more.(And thanks OP and others for this great thread)

I just bought a GDR-8082N(Dell) F/W 0106. I also bought a 50 PIN JAE CD/DVD-Rom to IDE adapter and a Laptop CD/DVD-Rom To USB 2.0 External Slim Case and a IDE to USB2.0 Adapter DVD/CD/2.5"3.5"
The drive will not read Wii games in the external case.(It will play movies though)The USB chipset in the unit is a Genesys GL811E.
If I hook up the 50 PIN JAE CD/DVD-Rom to IDE adapter to the drive and connect it to my other USB enclosure (5.25") the drive works perfectly at about 1280MB/hr The chipset is a Oxford OXFW911-IQ-A.
The IDE to USB2.0 Adapter DVD/CD/2.5"3.5" is utterly useless it seems.
Does anyone have an answer.
Are there any reasonably priced Laptop CD/DVD-Rom To USB 2.0 External Slim Cases around that use a Genesys chipset and actually work with this drive?
Thanks in advance.

brightspk,
Thanks you for taking the time to answer. The links you provided are exactly the enclosures in question. I in fact bought mine at the 1st link. The Dell drive just revs up and down and does not seem to want to settle. I flashed the GDR-8082N to F/W 120 but it is the same. As stated before, the drive works perfectly with the other USB 2.0 5.25" enclosure I have. I may try to flash it to an IBM firmware.
Which one do you suggest? I created a CD bootdisk and used the drive in my other system to boot to DOS to flash. It flashed perfectly.
brightspk, if you were able to use a GDR-8082N in the said Laptop CD/DVD-Rom To USB 2.0 External Slim Case, it makes me wonder if I have a faulty Chipset in mine.
Waiting for your reply.
Thanks,
Rai.

I just picked up a working drive off ebay.
Friidump 0.4 works great with SSBB and Super Paper Mario.
Drive model number is HL-DT-ST/DVD-ROM GDR8161B/0040
Rips at about 1015 MB/hr on an external USB cart.

brightspk,
In either case, before at 0106 and after flashing to 0120 the drive will not work at all in the Laptop CD/DVD-Rom To USB 2.0 External Slim Case
which I bought at the 1st link you mentioned above. I suspect the USB 2.0 decoder chip that this unit comes with.
Have you used an external slim case on your GDR-8082N drives before and if so, could you tell me which one and where you bought the unit?
The drives works flawlessly using a 50pin to Desktop IDE 40pin Adapter

in a regular USB 2.0 enclosure. No problem with RawDump at all.

Hi,
Same case.... 'Exactly...'
Its fine on two machines, but does seam to suffer on one laptop...
As you state, sounds like a chipset issue to me...
I can get the drive to work on the laptop, but it can be a pain in the A£$E !
