Hi all, im new here, and have a few questions - hope thats ok.
I just want to confirm the best drives to use for ripping are:-
GDR-8161b
GDR-8162b
GDR-8163b
GDR-8164b
Now as far as I understand it the GDR-8162b is the fastest drive - but its also the one most likely to fail.
...So out of the remaing drives which one is best? I'm just looking for the fastest most reliable drive. Im guessing its between the GDR-8163b and the GDR8164b?
Also, for each drive what is the best firmware for ripping? (I know that the latest firmware isnt always the best)
Thanks in advance :o)

I don't know if anybody still reads this thread since the last post was in OCT. but I was wondering if somebody could help me. I have a gdr-8082n with 0L03 firmware. I cant seem to get a dump rate any faster than 850 kbs. The drive is in a laptop instead of usb. Would this make a difference? Thank you for any help.

I'd have thought the drive would have been quicker in the laptop
I surpose the speed / memory, etc of the laptop would impact on performance.
Have you tried friidump and rawdump ?

Hey brightspk, thank you for the reply. I cant get rawdump to work except when the laptop is in safe mode so I had to use friidump. Either way, both produce the same speed. It very well could be the laptop. It's a 2 yr old toshiba with a 1.6 ghz processor and 1 gb of ram. I might just have to deal with the 6+ hrs for a dump. Thank you again for the reply.

Hi Edthesped --
hope you're still reading this thread ...
So how is the drive working? Other than being slow does it have any other issues?
They are still selling them, and I also noticed this slim enclosure -- would it fit?
I am thinking of buying both.
Also you mentioned a "link" to GDR-8164B. Could you repost it?
Thanks and happy holidays!

I currently have this drive for dumping Wii games.
HL-DT-STDVD-ROM_GDR8082N0106
I dump games with Rawdump through Parallels (Vista) on 10.5.6 OSX (Leopard) at a rate of approx. 1600mb. I read a lot of info about the 0L03 firmware update is the preferred firmware for this particular drive in regards to data dumps. Is this correct?
In addition, I've already attempted on flashing the drive with the firmware pack offered from Danger Bros (the bootable floppy) yet it doesn't recognize the usb drive on bootup. The dvd drive is active and loaded during the phase, yet its only recognizing hardwired IDE drives. Am I even able to flash the firmware via USB? Is the performance that much better than the 1600mb I'm getting now?
Thanks in advance.

Ethereal0,
My advise, do nothing... stick with the drive / firmware you have.
In order to flash, you need a none USB solution, JIDE connector
but doubt the dangerous bros firmware will work... you might lose
your drive...

Yea I tried that after I posted like an idiot...it doesn't work. I was hoping it would because someone said Gateway's (some of them) worked, mine apparently doesn't. Anyone know if there's a way to mod your wii without opening it?

I have a GDR8160B0009 that seems like it would work but I get an arithmetic error overflow. Could a firmware upgrade fix this?
