ok so my 360 has stoppped reading disks all together, not even spinning them up to try and read them. i've aquired an unused Hitachi drive to replace it. However my current(dead) drive is a Samsung. i've read the drives have to be flashed to work with a key code. i can find guides that talk about going from a Hitachi to Samsung, but not the other way around. also the guides focus on modded firmware to read copies. so my questions are....

can i fit the hitachi as a replacement?
if yes...
can it be done with legitimate firmware and not modded?
if yes or no...
is there a guide anyone can point me in the direction of that explains the procedure?

i just can't afford a new console right now and with halo 3 & fifa 08 just round the corner this couldn't have happened at a worse time me (well i guess if i bought both those games, got them home, and then it happened, that would be worse, but thats beside the point) :)

i look forward to hearing your comments

here you go guys

TUTORIAL ON HOW TO SPOOF A HITACHI DRIVE AS A SAMSUNG DRIVE OR AS A HITACHI FROM OTHER VERSION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Put your Hitachi drive in ModeB with SLAX or CrossWire Trick (Hitachi 78
and above only support SLAX Method) or Power on with tray open

- Make sure you attach the Drive to the PC with a Native Sata port because
some PCI Sata cards are not supported or even some USB-SATA adapters are
not working well at this moment. Does not harm to try
- Make sure your drive is visible and has a letter asigned on Windows

- Insert a DVD Movie or an XBOX/XBOX 360 game on the Hitachi DVD drive, it
does not matter wich, originals works better.

- Launch Toolbox

- Open the Firmware File you want to spoof (I recommend the final.bin, never
do changes to the original.bin as is the base fw)

- Now go to "Tools->Spoof Firmware",

- Choose the version as you want the fw report. Leave other options as is

- Please note that spoofing a drive as itself has the effect of UNSPOOFING it

- Click "APPLY SPOOF"

- Now the Main Window will show the spoofed details, go to
"Tools->Direct Drive Flash->Flash String ID (SPOOF DATA)"

- Make sure the Hitachi drive u want to flash is selected.

- Press the "Start Flashing" button and after a few seconds the thing is done
you can shutdown everthing and start testing the drive on the console.

one of this is my work just copied and pasted

anyway what u do first is u get your samsung firmware the original yeah and you open that up in toolbox which can be found on xbins and you spoof that to the hitachi its so easy anybody can do it and anyway then that will now show up as a hitachiand then you just flash the hitachi with it

pardon me for asking, but why go from a great drive to a drive thats known to be less effective at reading backups and stuff?

hitachis are known to go out faster than a samsung drive.

just my thoughts on it

Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz 1.4V//Maximus Formula (RF 0902)//2x2GB DDR2 800//8500GT (backup until 5870 comes out)//Corsair 650TX//Under water (30c Idle 50c Load)
