I have read through alot of this forum, but i fear i'd have to go back forever to get caught up--yes, i've only just now bought a PS2 and though i've backed up music and movies for 5 years now, i'm new to games. So here's what i think i understand: i can use dvd decrypter iso read and write to burn the disc. making discs should be the easy part. what i don't quite understand is what you need to play them. I've found swap magic discs, and a flip top, or a piece that says it gets plugged in. Not sure what works best or how to use them, and i'm in a small town that is not likely to know about installing modchips. A little back to basics about what parts to buy for Jenny come lately, please!

Since you have slim line, you only have 2 options (involves swap discs).
1. fliptops (change the cover of your ps2 so it will play backups)
2. Magic keys ( installing the keys WITHOUT opening the cover)
Need to remind you. Opening the cover might void the warranty of the ps2.
Personally (which I did), I would sell your slim line and change it to a fatter edition of PS2 (V9 might work best). This way you can do memory card exploit using a HDD to store up your games, and has better compatibility than using swap discs. A lot more work this way, but ended up saves you lots of money from no more purchasing blank DVDs :D

OK, so i don't mind buying the DVD-R's- get'em bulk online. Will they work with the fliptop then? What is with the swap discs? It looked on another page like you had to run the swap disc in the ps2 and then pry the drawer open to replace it with backup game? This flip top actually replaces the original top loading drawer? and that actually bypasses everything? I can't figure out how that could work.

yes they will work with fliptop.
Here's how swap discs work.
First you put in the swap disc, then afterwards you change the cd into your backup games without pushing the eject button.
This fliptop is used to hold down eject button sensor(or button). Basically it fooled the machine that the cover is still closed (which is already open).
Kinda hard for me to explain it. but you'll get my point once you got it :D
