i have a psp with firmware 2.82, i am trying to update it to firmware 3.71 (the current one) but it says the data is corrupt. error message SGT90000001.

Are you trying to install the official Firmware or 3.71 M33?
If official:
Download the EBOOT.PBP, rename it to UPDATE.PBP, then connect your PSP to your computer. Go to %:\PSP\GAME\ and create the folder UPDATE. Place UPDATE.PBP in the folder. It should look like this:
%:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\UPDATE.PBP
Disconnect your PSP, ensure the battery is > 78% charged with the AC Adapter and run the updater. Follow the bouncing ball as this updater has a new GUI interface.
If 3.71 M33:
You need to downgrade to 1.50. From there you have NO CHOICE but to install 3.52 M33 and then update #4. When done, you should have 3.52 M33-4 Firmware. Then copy over the files as reqiured and simple run the updater.
