CRIA allegedly shuts down Demonoid

article published on 25 September, 2007

Demonoid, the very popular torrent tracker, has allegedly been taken down by CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) as users have noticed that both the tracker and the website have been down for at least the last 24 hours. Although Demonoid and CRIA have yet to deny or confirm the reports it is definitely a possibility that Demonoid's new Canadian ISP shut the site down after ... [ read the full article ]

Yeah... Pretty sure the CRIA thing is crap either way... if they had managed to get something shut down, they'd be broadcasting it everywhere they could in an official capacity. Will be nice to have them back up an running :)

Granola is right, I found Demonoid was best for having quality products, unlike some other sites who would let morons upload supposed dvd rips only to find out later that it was just a piece o crap cam movie converted to vob files.(and no, not everyone provides samples)
WEll it's been 2 days plus now for demonoid, I really miss em.

Peace all

I agree, it feels as though something is missing from my life.

I hope they're back up soon.

I might even take up a religion and start praying for it to come back.

Amongst other things the torrent community preserves old recordings that the recording industry have consigned to the basement and refuse to publish any more - simply because they cannot meet today's "quality standards" - that is quality in terms of electronics not musical quality. I am afraid copyright lasts far too long to protect authors and artistes many of whom are dead long before the copyright runs out - handed on to family or businesses who did nothing towards creating the work. I personally feel that 20 years is long enough for any copyright - if the artiste, or more usually commercial conglomerate, hasnt made their money from it by then maybe it wasnt that good in the first place.

It's no big deal. At worst, even if the authorities managed to shut down all P2P, the people would just revert to the way we did it in the old days. We would form a share group of about fifty people. Then we would all pitch in to buy one copy of what ever movie or software everyone wanted. Then we would make copies for everyone that contributed. On top of that, everyone that got a copy would then make copies for their friends, usually for free. They will never get it through their thick heads that there is no practical way to stop people from sharing. LOL!!!
If they were smart and really wanted to stop P2P they would reduce their outrageous prices to the point where people would not go to the trouble of downloading anything.

Oh well, it was a good run for Demonoid. Nothing last forever. There will be other P2P's popping up. But I doubt they will match the quality of Demonoid.

I have been using Demonoid for several months. The other BT sites just give me a headache. Demonoid is so pleasant to browse, search, and upload to, it really has a nice user interface. I can set preferences to only show English torrents. And the comments posted by downloaders will quickly show if a torrent is real, fake, or has some other problem. Sometimes the poster will fix problems that the downloaders find with the uploads.

I am sorely missing Demonoid and I wish some of the other tracker sites would copy some of Demonoid's user interface features.

You know, I really agree with VioletHue. Demonoid is a very good example of what the "community" should be. Glad to see it's getting back up.

I also agree. I've saved a lot of money within the last couple months because of demonoid...

IIRC it was mid December 2004 when Demonoid went down for over a month and didn't come back until late January. I think that's when they moved their servers to the Netherlands. That was right before the MPAA took down that Lokitorrent web site amongst others. I'm not too worried about Demonoid.

Trackers are definitely back online according to here. Of course torrentfreak is the one that started the rumor to begin with.

the torrentfreak site is unreliable as a source of information. this was proven based upon a posted communication.

a more reliable source of uptodate info re: demonoid is:

http://www.thecircuitbox.com/demonoid/

What is most frustrating is the lack of any warning, news, or information from the administrator of the site; he probably knows at least the source of the problem if not its solution, and should let his community in on the beef.

That's similar to the message USA users get when they open Torrentspy. USA users are banned from Torrentspy.
