I say get the premium system if you have the money.
get the 1 month free Xbox Live Gold
The headset, wireless controller, hard drive.
Hard drive comes in handy if you plan to download movies, games or game demo's from XBL Marketplace.
Other than the extra things that you do not have to buy separate they are the same system.

You can either use eBay (I would not recommend, might get a banned console or RROD one), craigslist (unless you can test the system, log onto live, etc beforehand I would not recommend), or go to Gamestop. Gamestop will give you a warranty, and the guy's should open the drive for you and let you see what kind it is (go to the faqs and look at the different drive trays, its how you can recognize them). They check to make sure the systems can still log on to live and will offer you a warranty as well. Look for a Samsung, because if you find a Hitachi you may be unlucky and get a 79 which is much harder to mod the the earlier Hitachi's and the Samsung drives.

He means by opening the Drive Bay! Like hitting the eject button! You can tell which drive it is, just by ejecting it! Also, you can just get a Samsung drive on Ebay, and use the Swap Trick to swap it with a Benq Drive!

No, you will have to buy a used one. Ask them to plug it in and open the DVD drive, and by looking at the tray you can figure out whether it is a BenQ, Hitachi, or Samsung. You do not need to dismantle the unit to see what brand of drive it has, just to find the model (ex. ms25 or ms28 for smmay, 46, 47, 58, 78, etc for Hitachi...) Let them know you are looking for a Samsung, they might not have one. I did this a few months back and went to 2 Gamstops before finding one. I also purchased the warranty, and when I did get the RROD got another used 360 from them which I have since modded as well. Follow this link (it is from the FAQ posted by theridges for Xbox360 Mod/Hack) and you can see what the three different drives look like:

Also, good call Davgerm4, that would be a huge intro to the scene haha.

yeah get the PREMIUM or you will just end up buying the HD
seperate and paying more in the long run... You could use a
memory card but they are like $50 and you can't get much on em...
