Hey guys, I've been lurking the PSP boards for a while researching CFW for PSPs. Today I finally got my PSP at Gamestop for $100 with a coupon, not a bad deal. Now I would like to modify it so let me break down my situation and what I have.
I have only the PSP, charger, battery, and MS duo (32mb, the one that comes with the unit)
Down grade preference:
I'd prefer to downgrade without Pandora's battery because I have only the one battery that came with the unit, and If I were to make a pandoras battery I do not want to convert it back since it will be a useful tool for future downgrades. I'll make a pandoras battery later once I get a CFW running and when I have more money to buy the extra battery and 256mb MS pro duo. I found a 2.71 downgrader made by Dax/Mathieulh/Yoshi at QJ. Here is the linkto the file I downloaded.
Motherboard:
Upon doing research believe I have a TA-080/81 because when I open the UMD tray and look at the green PCB upside down I see the letters "IC6001." A quick google search determined that IC6001 is a TA-080/81 (correct me if I'm wrong.)
Current firmware:
The unit I have has Sony official firmware 2.71. From my understanding in the past this FW would require the use of the GTA UMD to get around the FW's security, but it looks like I can downgrade without the game UMD now.
Problems:
- In the README.txt provided by Dax for the 2.71 downgrader, Dax states that I'd need a friend with a 1.50 PSP to send me "DOWNDATER" The first issue I have with this is that none of my friends have a PSPs. The second issue is even if I did have a friend with a 1.50 PSP where would I get "DOWNDATER" from because it wasn't included in Dax's 2.71 downgrader rar pack?
- I don't have a PC to PSP USB connection cable. Do I even need one?
- I have 32mb MS Duo (I will buying a 4gb MS pro duo very soon) Will the 32mb MS be sufficient for the downgrade? Because I've read that PSPs are picky when it comes to a MS being a "duo" and not a "pro duo."
Options:
So what are my options here?
Is there a better/easier way to downgrade my TA-080/81 PSP with 2.71 OFW?
Remember I'm not looking to install CFW right now. My current objective is to only downgrade my PSP in order to prepare it for CFW.

I figured all you guys would have known about it so I didn't post the coupon last night.

It's a legitimate print-out coupon. The only bad thing is that today is the last day for the sale. So, call around to your local Gamestops to see if they have any used units available.
Also, does anyone know where I could find an inexpensive 4gb MS pro duo that has a good track record with PSPs? The cheapest one I can find is on Newegg for $54.00

I dont know if there are gamestops overseas-as these forums are based in Finland-But that a good deal for the fat psp...And you said it was the core system that comes with the 32MB memory stick?
As far as your 4GB from NewEgg-Thats a good price-you can get a Sandisk 4GB from circuit city for 59.99 also-Just stay clear of eBay for your memory needs as most are fake ones from Hong Kong.

The PSP wasn't supposed to come with a memory stick. They accidentally left it in the PSP and I accidentally forgot to tell their clerk about it when he sold it to me. :P
I don't know if there are Gamestops over seas (I live in the US).
I had read that a lot of people were getting scammed on eBay with fake memory sticks so I am definitely steering clear of eBay.

Well thats still a good deal-and extra bonus-you have a firmware that can easily be downgraded without the need for any game exploits or the pandora battery..I think I might stop by my local gamestop today, and see about one...I have a card with about $100 in store credit on it...
Yeah, definitely stay away from eBay for memory sticks-Its better to spend the extra money on quality...

Yeah I actually already downgraded shortly after sicdude provided me with that link, lol. It was far easier and faster than I thought it would be.
I've already got all my files for CFW M33 3.52-4 (which seems to be the best CFW currently from what I've read over the past few weeks.) and a short guide to install it written by larrylje, so I just need to wait for my 4gig mem stick and USB cable to arrive from newegg.
If I were you I'd pick that extra PSP up. If you decide you don't want it you can always eBay it and make $10 or $20 off of it.

Yeah-I went ahead and picked one up-so that makes #4 for me...
You could probably just use your 32MB for upgrading to 3.52M33-If you have a memory stick reader on your computer-otherwise you'll have to wait until you get a cable..If you have a digital camera, you could use the cable for that-the cables are pretty much universal...
