I would use DVD Flick instead of Nero for avi conversions. Here is a guide.

Burning slow can be as bad as burning too slow...I wouldn't burn 16X media any slower than 8X. The glitches can be due to either excessive compression or cheap media. There are a few other things that can cause pixellation, pausing and freezing...but those two seem to be the main culprits.

I assume you are talking about backing up from a DVD now? Rip your DVD to HDD first using DVDFab HD Decrypter, then use Recode to compress (if needed) and burn to a blank DVD.

heres some info also

first read on the forums theres plenty of answers

dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, isn't updated anymore so they need the help of an updated ripper like dvd fab decrypter or anydvd for them to work.

ripit4me was pulled from the sites but still works on most movies. heres that guide

so you have several choices you can use dvd fab to rip dvd shrink to transcode and dvd decrypter or nero to burn ,this is all freeware.

or

you can use the easiest program out there clonedvd 2 + anydvd (free 21 day trial) This is my pic. you can download here
